I decided to tackle the routine maintenance of the upper timing chain guide.

Boy was I in for a surprise

I'll let the pics and video tell the story

err oh dear  Shocked  I guess the missing piece or pieces are in the bottom.  Did mine beginning of the year the old bit looked just like the new bit.  I think Gazziz rebuilt one that had a chunk like that out of it, but it jammed in the gear and did some valve gear damage and he brought it like that.  I thought it must be just the plastic bit that fell off but that is shocking.

Ah yes, but over here in the UK the dealers think of a price then double it and add on the swindling gov stick another 20% on.

Ah yes but at least you get some service back from the gov. The state of medical care and road conditions here are terrible.

You've not driven our roads lately  Wink That said, we could do with a few more dirt roads here to make our 4wd's feel at home  Razz

More seriously we do have a good health care system and it does cost. Lot of whinging about the state of it at times but you'd have to go a long way to find a more dedicated set of people even in these tight times. As to our roads then they do get some hammer. We're a small island bursting at the seems with cars and lorries. Roads are bound to break up. Still, we do pay enough tax every time we fill. I noticed last night at our local fuel station that diesel had crept back up to just shy of £1.43 for a liter   Twisted Evil

At least we still pay under a pound/litre.

I still find it funny that you guys insist on mph & mpg but get sold fuel by the litre  Twisted Evil

We used to go by Gallons, but as the prices started to slowly creep up the government changed it over to litres to make it still sound cheap, that way people wouldn't notice just how much they where paying for a Gallon...

As part of trying to rectify my misfire problem I am doing other out standing jobs while ive got the bonnet open.

Glad I did because the timing chain guide had completely warn away and the chain had almost cur through the plate, unbelievable have a look at the pics which are up on dropbox.

Big thanks to all the guys who have posted about this especially Marius and his easy to follow video. You have definately saved my engine.

Thanks

Looking at the ware I recon the nylon was warn away years ago, and hopefully the metal ware is so fine that any micro metal particles have been caught by the filter.
Cheers

After reading all the posts about the upper chain guide I decided to replace mine. Imagine my astonishment when I removed the rocker cover to find the guide gone! As in the picture at the start of this subject all that remained was half the guide. I presume the rest is at the bottom of the engine somewhere.
My problem, is now, the chain has now tensioned, as the tensioner has done its job and taken up the slack.
Is there a way of adjusting the tensioner so that I can install the new upper chain guide?

Any help/suggestions appreciated

Thanks

It is more of a slider than a tensioner. There is a hydraulic/spring piston  that mounts on the side of the engine and can be taken out, I just took my slider off and fitted a new one.
