Ready to get flamed, but here goes!

I bought an '89 LWB Pajero Wagon Exceed with the 2.5TD 4D56 engine, in the summer.  The seller mentioned that it could be a bit slow to start, but until a couple of weeks ago it was OK.  Now it needs squirt of easystart (ether) to get it going first thing, then it is alright for the rest of the day.

The only manual which came with the car is the original one in Japanese, full of cartoons.

My question is, how do I make the glowplugs work?  There is no glowplug light coming on when I turn the key to the position before the starter motor engages.  I have tried pushing the key as per a Landrover 90 I sometimes drive, and that doesn't work either.

Is there a manual switch I need to press to activate the glowplugs, or what? If there is a switch, where is it?

hi there glider rider, welcome to the club mate!!!! Wink

the manual button for the glow plugs is one that some of us have fitted ourselves as an aftermarket thing....because the glowplug ecu has probably gone down....and this was a cheaper option for me!!!! Wink i don't think all 2.5's have a glow plug light on the dash....(correct me if i'm wrong guys and gals!!!)....you have to listen for the clicks to indicate they are warm enough to start !!!! Wink

PostPosted: Tue Jan 10, 2012 13:08    Post subject: Glow Plugs and Non Starter Reply with quote

Hi, My vehicle a 1996 Pajero 2.8 TD long wheel base started to play up again this year when the weather got cold, OK nothing unusual about that.
So took the glow plugs out and had a look at them, only replaced about 9 months ago with cheap after market plugs.
On inspection on the clean workshop bench found the following:-
No 1 plug glowing red hot but drawing about 12 amps
No 2 plug the heater element had pulled out of the glow plug housing, so the electrical connection would work i.e. U/S
No 3 plug only only drawing about 4.5 amps, getting hot but not visibly red hot
No 4 plug, element open cct so not much help

So conclusion was that it was no wonder that the engine had been a pig to start. I have ordered a set of NGK expensive glow plugs in the hope that they will last longer when installed in the Pajero from  Mister solutions.
http://www.mister-solutions.co.uk/ngk-glow-plug-part-number-cy55-3082-p.asp

Reading through the NGK technical information that is on the web, I find that there are ceramic glow plugs that NGK produce which have internal electrical switches. Sounds interesting so have sent a question off to NGK about them, does anyone have any information about availability of ceramic glow plugs

Along with the glow plug problem, the alternator packed up, so ordered new replacement from Milner's which arrived promptly as usual with that firm and has been fitted, no problem.  So just waiting for the glow plugs to arrive now.

I have run Peugeot diesel vans for about 25 years and only had to replace two glow plugs in that time. How is it that there seems to be so much trouble with the Pajero glow plugs? Any ideas?
All the best,

Following up on numerous posts on tinternet regarding this problem.

Dont listen to old wives tales!

Check the cheapest things first but DONT buy the cheapest Glowplugs most are *beep*.

My experience.

Would not start  so ordered from e-bay cheap glowplugs, fitted still no good.
Changed starter solenoid, still no good
Changed buzzbar (old one looked knackered), still no good
Expert told me likely lifter pump seal gone as it took 30 secs to fire up, thought it was air getting in, replaced it,still no good.
Time to start all over again (voltage check to buzz bar reading good.)
Wipped out (new) glow plugs, checked for continuity of power found nothing, checked resistance as double check, nothing.
Appeared to have found problem! Bought a set of NGK heaters fitted and now starts first time.

There seems to be an awful lot of people  having these problems so my advice is always check the easy things and BEWARE of cheap glowplugs.

There are also different voltages for the plugs, try and ascertain which fits yours, mine were 11V, if you have had good results with the ones being removed take the part number from glowplug body and search for direct replacement.

PostPosted: Fri Mar 29, 2013 12:53    Post subject: Halfords Battery Reply with quote

Noticed that someone bought battery from Halfords at rip off price.

bit of advice when buying from Halfords.

They have a policy that they wont be beaten on price (not a lot of peolple know that) but it was advertised in small print on their door.

Questioned the manager who agreed, asked for a comparison price so I quoted Battery Megastore (which is on internet) price was approx 50% cheaper.

They matched it......... so always try the question.............nothing to lose!
