..if you have a socket that looks like an OBD2 socket (16 PIN) but is not deemed compliant you can get generic codes by shorting pins 1 and 4 (or 5) with a paper clip or stripped piece of wire.

1.  with ignition off short pins 1 and 4 (or 5)
2.  turn ignition to ON position while watching the dash lights but DO NOT start engine running. If you then look at the CHECK ENGINE light it flashes a code- a 0.5 second flash denotes a unit of 10 and a 0.2 second flash denotes a unit of 1, ignore the   initial illumination when key turned to on as this is the normal start illumination but from there on you get a series of flashes denoting your fault code.
3.  once repair is made follow procedure again through to fault code only this time disconnect battery earth terminal for 30 seconds to clear fault codes, turn ignition to off reconnect and check once again to make sure fault has been cleared.

THIS WAS ATTEMPTED AND CONFIRMED ON A SHOGUN 1996 (P) with a 16 pin socket under drivers footwell near accelerator pedal
(gave me a fault code of 11 : oxygen sensor)

FOR MORE INFO SEARCH "TROUBLECODES" DOT NET : i followed the instruction for a mitsubishi diamante also found same instruction elsewere just denoting v6 mitsubishi but it worked a treat

hope this may help someone, apologies if this has already been posted before.
