|

Hoping someone can help (or simply confirm my fears).
Pajero 2.8TD (94) Exceed.
No power, revs through range on standstill, but moves very slow with no power. Loads of black smoke.
Starts first time everytime (no cutting out).
EGR is clean as a whistle and working fine (have also now fitted a good blanking kit - no change)
Oil filter has been changed.
Air filter is new.
Fuel filter is new.
Tank filter is clean and free of gunge.
Turbo seems to be working as it should (no obvious probs)
Hoses are fine - no splits etc.
I am starting to think either pump timing or front pump seal.
But any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance. |

I doubt its the front seal, seen them when faulty over 400 times and never seen this before.
Does the intercooler hose inflate if you rev it while stationary? obviously looking at it with the bonnet up? |

Hiya Mark
There is no difference in the intercooler pipe between tick over and high revs (at standstill).
It doesn't feel inflated at all......absolutely no difference - basically from not running to high revs.
Hope this will give you some ideas.
Thanks for your time. |

One other thing that has just sprung to mind..........
prior to these probs....... now and again there would be a small fuel leak under engine.......... not happened for awhile though......and I never got to the btm of it.....it just stopped !
When I say small.... im talking 3 - 4 droplets. |

When you say large boost pipes stay same, they only inflate on boost so if you give a sharp rev up to 3k and I mean a sharp (quick) rev you should
see them inflate but will not stay inflated once you are at 3k as you will go off boost, if they don't inflate the waist gate on the turbo may be stuck
open and all the boost could be going out the exhaust pipe, also check all the small boost pipes from turbo over to the top of injector pump are in good order, The fuel leak may have been a flattened/hardened 'O' ring at the base of the pump, there are three down there, a bottle of brake fluid in the tank
can help with this by softening the seals, there is a write up on using brake fluid in the 'Top Tips' section. |

Hiya Dave
Thanks for your reply.
Boost pipes were not inflating at all...... so I will check what you say as soon as I get time (work & kids get in the way of all the important things !).
As for the fuel leak....... I did do the brake fluid thing which cured it...... well I assume it cured it cos I have not seen it since, just mentioned it in-case it may have had some bearing on current problems.
Thanks again. |

Thats what i was thinking, to be sure if you squeeze the intercooler hose with one hand and keep it squeezed while revving up with the other on the throttle linkage you should feel the hose expand pushing your fingers out...
If this isnt happening either your turbo wastegate (what controls your turbo boost) is stuck open or your turbo is *beep*. this would also fit with black smoke, not enough air but same fuel so its over fuelling which produces black smoke. |

Oh joy
Wastegate appears to be fine and operating correctly..............The pipe is expanding under pressure (when it gets there)...revs take awhile to build...regardless how much it is revved.....but once revs are up to 3-4000 I can feel the pipe expanding.
It is also running very rough on idle.....almost to the point of stalling (idles at around 700 rpm but with loads of engine vibration) used to idle at around 90-1000rpm, but doesn't stall, but its very difficult to move the beast, low revs, hard to increase revs - very big delay on peddle depression and rev increase...almost like a massive flatspot.....but it will gain given 20-30seconds.......still stumped .......if I cant sort it soon........its going to be visiting the big mechanic in the sky (scrapyard) !!!! |

Change the fuel filter again and pull the tank filter and check, I had lack of power years back which turned out to be fungi in the tank slimming the
filters up. |

Just reading through.
have had a couple of vehicles like this.
not mitsubishis.
the cam plate had heavy wear on it.
then they just chip away and lobes are left very small.
Just sounds like this with your symptoms.
You be best looking for a diesel specialist and ask him for his opinion.
Might not cost you anything as he be hoping to get the job.
I assume it starts all ok so no air leak. |
