|
|
Someone locally is selling a Japanese import 1st gen Pajero which I may be intereted in buying.
I called a couple of insurance companies and they both returned a figure of around £1300 to insure it 3rd party. One of those was Adrian Flux, who I was told could be cheaper.
Although I am 23, this is around twice what I am usually quoted for a regular car. I passed my test in February 2010 and haven't had any accidents, convictions or points since.
I have heard before that this is due to difficulty getting replacement parts for imported vehicles. However, why is that an issue if I only insure it 3rd party?
I tried exactly the same details with a Nissan Patrol that was UK registered from new and that was quoted around £850.
The cheapest quote I got for the Pajero was £1000 fully comp with Elephant.
Does anyone have any ideas how I could insure it cheaper? |

Keep shopping around, become an advanced driver, get a insurance tracking black box fitted...lots of ways but eventually you will hit the lowest price available. I usually get on the big comparison sites every year, find the cheapest and then phone them direct playing the 'but you're not paying the comparison site fees this way so you must be cheaper' card, then phone a few more giving them you're lowest quoted price to see if they'll beat it. Bit of a hassle but I once saved £1100 this way
Give NorCounty a call. Specialist 4x4 policies so no driving other cars but way cheaper than my usual quotes |

I had a 1997 2.8 Shogun before my present Pajero.
I'm quite old so I got fully comp insurance for about £300.
I then got my Pajero and the same insurance company wanted £900 - despite the Pajero being more or less the same truck.
I eventually got it for £450 from Flux.
For some reason the label "import" increases the cost of insurance - whether third party or fully comp - there doesn't seem to be a sensible reason for this!
Try a company called "Lifesure" they were one I used - although their prices increased slowly over the years. |

I got mine with Aviva through swintons as the broker, i had 0 ncb when i started and it a about £950 fully comp. i was advised it was cheaper to go fully comp than 3rd party, might be worth exploring that angle.... |

It was Swinton that wanted to treble my premium when i moved from a Shogun to a Pajero.
I had been with them for over 20 years and had full ncd - never had an accident. |

Thanks for the replies. Fully comp does actually come in about £100 cheaper. Presumably fully comp would also allow me to drive other vehicles 3rd party?
Most of them tell me over the phone that I get a discout for using the comparison sites. The online quotes do usually come out slightly cheaper. |

I seem to change insurers every year just to get the new customer discount. |

I tried the NFU and was told they wouldn't insure it as it's an import But i seem to recall that at least one member on here got his Paj insured through them |

Do you have to be connected with farming in some way to use the NFU? I live in suburban West London, and have no connection to farming at all. |

Thanks for the replies everyone. I managed to get £890 fully comp for the year with Elephant through confused.com. Considering my age and the fact that the vehicle is an import, this seems very good.
It's only about £100 more than the cheapest quote I had when I tried a bog standard Ford Focus and similar cars.
NorCounty wouldn't touch me as I am under 25. The NFU said exactly the same "unless your parents have a lot of business with us". I also tried a Japanese import specialist who wanted £2500.
I should be picking the truck up tomorrow with a new MOT on it. |
