According to the WM the Intercooler has to be removed to renew the fuel filter! Is that really the case or is there a short cut? TIA. Steve.

It's only four easily accessible bolts, a couple of jubilee clips and a couple of wiring connectors, so not exactly a big deal to remove the intercooler.

It probably is possible to change the filter without doing so, but I suspect it'll take more than 10 minutes longer trying to do it through the small gap than spending that 10 minutes removing and refitting the intercooler and making the filter far more accessible.

Removing the intercooler takes me about 5 minutes on my MkII

I find it easier to remove the complete filter from the truck - 2 x 12mm bolts, 2 hoses and two electrical connectors on mine and yours will be similar.

You can then get the complete filter into a vice.

Yep - 10 minutes extra time: 5 mins to take off, 5 mins to put back on. Smile

Just done a filter change on my 04 sport. Did not remove a single thing apart from the filter  Very Happy  Not sure what it is like on other models. Luckily the mechanic who last changed it did it correctly and only nipped it up so was easy just to remove water trap sensor then remove filter. Like I say not sure about other models but on mine there is ample room.

Takes longer to get your tool kit out and find a 12mm spanner than it does to replace the fuel filter, just remember the fuel system will need bleeding once the new filter is fitted. Fill the filter up with clean diesel first then use the manual pump on the filter housing whilst undoing the bleed screw on the housing until diesel comes out then tighten everything up and off you go.

Changing my fuel filter when servicing truck this weekend so if i havnt got a bottle of diesel around and thus cant fill the filter up before fitting it is it okay to just crank the engine and keep bleeding it? Oh and where is the bleed valve?

And the answer is yes. Just pump the primer and use the bleed screw. No need to remove intercooler either.
