I've had a problem with my '92 2.5 auto LWB Paj sice towing and the A/T Temp light came on to which I've had the Transmission oil changed and all other fluids topped up but now I'm running at a lot higher revs for the speed i.e. 4000rpm for about 60mph, is this just due to the age or am I missing a minor adjustment or even a in need of a new transmission?

The engine revs at 4000 rpm for 60 mph sure is far too high.

It sounds like this occurred only after the transmission oil was changed, I'd be looking there first.

The oil used ? The proper priming of the system ? I'm not into the autos so;

Someone else will be along soon.

Has it happened since you changed the ATF?

If so then check the level when the truck is at normal temperature with the engine running and in Neutral.

Also - did you use SPIII ATF - Many people use Dextron which is not the correct one.

Finally - you haven't switched the Overdrive off by mistake have you?

I'll have a look at the level as you say peteinchad what should it be?

the fluid was changed by a reputable gearbox firm so i don't know what they put in

I've tried this with the over drive both on and off and there is little difference

the oil was changed when i almost cooked the engine whilst towing with very little oil and water

That the OD " makes very little difference" confirms it's transmission related.

There is at least one recent detailed description by assassin on here, it covers the steps to be certain the ATF is at the correct level.

Is over drive working? try switching it on and off while driving, if its not working it maybe a bad connection at the transmission temp sensor on the engine, yes on the engine, lol

there is a sensor that stops overdrive from working until it sees a certain engine coolant temp in an attempt to get the gearbox and fluid up to operating temp quicker by working the gearbox harder by disabling the over drive  Smile

Thanks for all your wise comments, I'm not the best mechanically minded so will be passing these onto my mechanic to see if he can make head or tail of it

Cheers
