Hi guys

I have a dashboard warning light fault where after half an hour of driving the low oil, battery, A/T temp and fuel filter light all stay on. Car is fully serviced and running fine.

Before I take it to an auto electrician I wondered if anybody knew of this fault or any common areas to check.

many thanks

Matt

On a MkII - there is something called the "three light syndrome"

The A/T, battery and fuel filter warning lights all illuminate and it means the alternator is on it's way out.

Maybe it is the same on your model.

Duff alternators on the 3.2 give similar symptoms, also dash wiring faults.

If you have an ammeter you can check the output, if you have a voltmeter you can also do a similar test.

Start the engine and connect the voltmeter to the battery, it should read over 12.6 volts at idle, switch on everything, rear screen heater, internal heater on full blast, headlights on full beam, fog lights front and rear, basically everything on full whack. Take a reading and your voltmeter should rise close to 14 volts.

Remove and check your battery connections as these sometimes come loose, check your earth straps from the battery to the engine and ensure they are clean.

If you off road you can get crud into your alternator and a simple thing is to blast electrical cleaner into it while the engine is cold and leave to evaporate.

Thanks Guys, your advice is much appreciated.

I have had my suspicions about the alternator owing to a couple of times the battery has gone flat despite the battery  being new, I'd put in down to it only doing short journeys.

I have a basic tester which suggested the alternator was ok but I will get one with a gauge on it to measure actual output.

I'll do the checks you suggest but if it doesn't resolve it then I will bite the bullet and get a new alternator but the one I need is 140 amp and isn't cheap!

cheers

Matt

Get it reconditioned by a local specialist.
