Hi Rog,

(1) Connect your long wire to the green/white wire on the relay and the other end of it to earth - Do the lights come on?

If they do then

(2) Connect the other end of your long wire to the Green/white wire on the back of the column switch and turn the switch on.

Let me know if you get lights.

Enjoy your meal - annoying when you get dragged out when busy playing  Very Happy - it happened to me last Tuesday!

Evening Pete,

Well a nice roast dinner later and still I don't think the side light saga is solved Smile

As you say when I earthed a nice new green/white wire the side lights work.

When I then connect it to the solder point of the old/original green/white wire it buzzes erratically, I tried the other solder points and this causes the lights to work, including the dash and various others, compass, etc.

Will a picture of the points I connecting to help Pete?  Just to confirm, the new wire is tucked into the old white/green of the relay and refitting the relay to hold the wire in place, and the other end on the connectors, I'll get a pic now whilst its still light...

Back in 5

Thanks again

Rog

Here's the points I'm playing with, breaking the solder points into 2 rows of 3, 2nd on row 2 is the original green/white wire, this causes the buzzing, all other points, I think, certainly the majority of them, earth the switch and the interior lights come on.

Thanks again

Rog

Hi Rog,

Nothing worse than crawling around cars with a full stomach!!

We've worked out that the green/white wire has something wrong with it - when you earth the new long wire the lights work.

Two things to do now:

(1) Use your continuity meter to test the continuity of the green/white wire. You have your long wire connected to the relay end of it so all you need to do is connect your meter between the long wire and the green/white on the column switch.

(2) Next thing - if you have continuity in (1) is to earth the green/white wire on the back of the switch to the body.

If (1) shows continuity between the switch and the relay then your original green/white wire is OK - which I think it will be. So you can remove the long wire.

If (2) makes your lights come on then it has to be a faulty switch - the buzzing of the relay is probably an iffy contact inside the switch. Might be worth trying to spray some WD40 into it.

Good luck

I'll hopefully get a look tomorrow or in the week Pete, I'm not having that greatest of luck with cars/trucks as I think you kind of realise, check out last weeks fun and games...

I think I've mentioned before that I also have a Toyota Hilux Surf, 3rd gen, great truck, had it about 4 years, no grief at all, week before last out of nowhere I start hearing a groaning noise when I get out, thought to myself I've not put on that much weight surely, bounced the suspension up and down a bit and it groaned a bit more, looked under there couldn't see anything out of the ordinary, took my wife's car the next day and she popped the truck into Kwik-fit as I hoped they'd look underneath spot the problem, give her the horror story, she'd tell me I'd get on and fix it, they discovered one of the drop links I fitted a few months back for the MOT needed tightening, job done, groaning was back a couple of days later, I checked and tightened them myself this time, all good, then last Tuesday as I pull out of the petrol station I hear a big clunk, great that's the bloody drop link snapped or something I thought, lets pull back into the petrol station, on turning in the truck clunked again and lurched right over to one side and then there was a big load of noise, I jumped out and was faced with this, the top ball joint had sheared straight through...

With my recent luck with the Pajero I'd decided I was going to sell all my other trucks, and car, so I could get a little Golf TDI to run about to work in, much more affordable and use the Pajero as my toy off roader if I ever get it up and running.  Due to the above I decided I really need to the Golf sooner rather than later, picked one up on Friday, got it in Surrey, about 2 hours away from home, as I'm about 5 minutes from home coming over a steep hill the power goes a bit on me, then I realise its in like some sort of limp mode quite, under powered, get to my in-laws to pick up the kids when I return to the Golf it starts and runs fine again, until I push it a bit and it all goes flat again, anyway before I push you completely into a coma something is clearly a miss with the new car, neighbour thinks I've got an air leak on the turbo hoses somewhere, pull one off and there's the big split, wonderful, just need a new hose and hopefully all is well, meanwhile I decided to try and puncture repair style fix it, plus a bunch of glue and tape, etc, made no difference.  Its now running regardless of a turn off and on again type effort as if there is no longer a turbo, for the love of God...

Here's a pic of the new addition to my collection of non-working vehicles, this makes 5; Golf 1, Golf 2, Pajero, Hilux, Fourtrak!

Thanks again Pete

Wow Rog - you really are having a bad time with your vehicles!

The last time a wheel did that on me was a Mini about 40 years ago - that was a top ball joint as well.

Life was much safer when cars had kingpins.

It's bad luck not even getting home with a new car before it breaks! - the trouble with newer cars is that they seem to drop into limp mode for the slightest thing.

That's why I like my Paj - the electronics are really simple and mostly to do with the gearbox.

When it finally gets to the time to get rid of it I will have problems finding something as simple - I'm seriously considering a Mk1 Escort. No sensors at all - no computers - no fuel injection etc etc.

i had one of my alternator bolts start to drive itself out. consequently my dash lights went out but i didnt know why at the time. then my sidelights stopped working and then my girlfriend who was driving behind me told me that my tail lights were off for the most part. i tightened the bolts on the alternator and everything worked as normal.

Cheers Rabbit, sounds like something simple enough to check when I next get out there, which sadly for me is generally weekends.

Thanks again

you need to do a search on here using the terms tail lights, dash lights side lights not working and there is a good guide by this south american member i think from guyana who lists the common faults for a combination of electric faults regarding lights.

Evening Pete,

Sorry I've not been back sooner, been tinkering with my Golf, finally got that going about right now, just a split hose and the car barely ran, this car lark is painful at times!

It seems you're right regarding the old green white wire, we are getting continuity, so removed the new wire from the equation for the time being.

Earthing the green/white at the solder/switch lights the lights, but no buzzing this time?  Tried the switch on its own just in case my disturbing things had fixed it, but no joy, so it's looking like the switch at this point?  I'll dig out the other set I bought a few weeks back and have a play with them tomorrow and see what we get...

Thanks again

Hi Rog - It does seem like the switch if earthing the wire at the switch end makes the lights come on.

I've been busy sorting out my son's new car - new to him anyway - indicator switch broken on his though!

Just a thought -try earthing the body of your column switch and see if the lights come on

Morning Pete,

I'll pop out in a bit and earth the switch at the column, raining again...

What car has your son gone for?

Thanks again

Morning Rog,

It was just a thought that the earthing to the switch might be iffy.

Son got a Saxo - God knows why!!

It had cooling problems but a new thermostat sorted it but he's got the usual indicator switch problem so need to change that but the steering wheel has to come off and it's got an airbag in it.

Going to the scrapyard and practice taking one off there first I think!

Bloody rain!  Just not the time of year for cars/trucks if you don't have a garage Sad

Saxo!?  How old is he? 17!  Razz

Did you put up your gazebo in the end Pete? If so how did it fair?

Thanks again

Rog

He's 26 - had a saxo when he was 17 and wanted another - bloody French rubbish!

The weather was good when Rick did the chain so the gazebo hasn't been used - never even put it together, and probably never will!

It's dried up here so I'm trying to get my subwoofer to work - it was fine on the old stereo but nothing with the new one! I need to rewire the circuit to use the other inputs on the sub but too much work at the moment because the sub is in the back door and I can't face running new cables all the way to the back - too many trim panels to take off.
