PostPosted: Mon Oct 20, 2014 23:31    Post subject: hot rear disc and wheel Reply with quote

New to the site after buying a Shogun 3.2 53 plate field in August to pull our caravan.  Just changed all of the discs at the weekend but my OS rear is heating up.  Renewed the caliper tonight as the rubber was all split and the piston was heavily pitted.  The disc and wheel is still boiling hot and if anything it is hotter than before.   Cleaned slider bolts and used silicon grease provided in the box with the new rubber boots.  I feel beat but want to understand what has happened. As soon as the wheel cools im going to put the old outside pad back in to help with the pressure from the caliper.  One thing I noticed when I put the bottom caliper bolt back in  on the weekend was the disc started to pull away from the hub?  When the wheel went back it was ok but it would hardly turn.  Any help would be appreciated.  Sad

Experts on the mk3 will be here soon, have you checked wheel bearing, presume all bled ........after that check break pipe, not sure if a flexi pipe as these can collapse inside, allows pressure to pads but not off when pedal  released............if makes sense. Happened to me,replaced calliper and pads.........still same and it did turn out to be the pipe. No evidence of the pipe collapsing inside, just a guess tbh...........

Hi and thanks for replying.  Wheel bearings, pipes look ok.  Just cleaned the caliper bolts and regreased with poly grease?  The strange thing is the wheel is quite loose now and the caliper is moving freely??  Got my dear wife out of bed to push the pedal to ensure brake fluid was definitely there as well. The abs fully pressurised the system so no probs there either.   Hate not knowing what is going wrong. ...

If the problem was there as soon as you put it together the problem won't be hydraulics as you hadn't used the brakes at this time.

You said the disc was move when the bottom claimer bolter my in so take it apart and pay attention to that area, if it's a long slide pin make sure the hole hasn't hot an old rubber grommit it in the bottom of it that may have come adtift off the pin, it's quite a common fault.

Hi.  The grommit was barely attached so I removed it. When I removed the bolts last night after midnight the silicon grease was nearly gone from the bolts.  As I said above I fully regreased them on fefit.
On Saturday I couldn't really move the wheel at all when the bottom bolt was refitted it was pulling the disc off the hub.  When all was cool last night the disc was moving.   Initially when I put the new caliper on I removed my grips from the brake pipe and the caliper expanded and filled the rubber around with b fluid.  Wow wasn't expecting that.  Lesson for me there. Drive to work will be quite worrying if this is going to continue to madly heat up... Shocked

My car has started to slightly move from side to side and is squeaking at the rear.  Feels like I'm going over a bump so pulled over and waiting for a garage to open.  Nightmare now!!

I had this with a transit I had a few years back, took ages to figure it out cos there was no visible evidence, changed the pipe, job done, and did the other side then for good measure.

Hi there, might be worth opening a new topic here
http://www.pocuk.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=137

You will get more attention there as this is a different issue, could be suspension sub frame/broken coil etc

Hi.  I left my car with a garage where I explained my shogun life to him from the last 3 days........called in the afternoon to be told that the brake shoes were catching on the OS rear where I had the hot wheel issue hence why the car was lifting up and down or side to side. It was catching enough to hold the wheel then release it  hence my hot wheel and squealing noise.  He checked the flexi pipes as well.  He said my work was all good but experience prevailed from himself.  Now I hope he gets it through the mot for me that's why I changed all of  the discs.   Fingers crossed he's right. Confused  If you think I should change anything else straight away can you let me know please. Already changed oil ( 5w 30 fully syn) and renewed the coolant. Thanks.

Does this model have the handbrake inside the drum of the disc?

Hope your mechanic has sorted it for you...

Thanks for asking about my car.  It was my fault.   I had over adjusted the rear shoes inside of the disc.  The mechanic described it as a new bit of sand paper quite course until it is slightly bedded in.  Lesson learnt but he couldn't fault what I had done changing all of the discs, pads and shoes for my first attempt.   Front pads are easy discs and handbrake shoes quite difficult, but I gained knowledge for next time.  Thanks David.
