From what I have read, DAB suffers from losing the signal and blank reception areas.

I've just fitted a new head unit this week and stayed with the trusty old FM.

Someone will be along who has first hand experience of them.

That's interesting, I was looking for better reception, I'm in rural North Yorkshire on more modern vehicles with fm for example radio 1 has a strong clear signal most places, however on my shogun it drops a lot, is this an issue with the aerial or perhaps an old head unit, would I get a better reception from a more modern fm radio unit.?

I found this

Quote:
DAB Reception: UK Coverage & Antenna Requirements

As with the majority of digital communications systems, a shortcoming of DAB is that it either produces consistently good results or horrible noises. From the point of view of the motorist, nothing is more irritating and disconcerting than to be driving along and listening to an excellent-quality broadcast which suddenly turns into the infamous "boiling mud" characteristic of a DAB receiver running out of error correction. At worst, the audio can suddenly disappear completely. Since it will be a long time before DAB transmissions cover all areas, and indeed there will always be pockets of poor reception, it follows that fast reversion to a corresponding analogue broadcast is ideally required in a mobile DAB receiver. This in turn requires good RDS performance. Sadly, no DAB receiver yet trialled performs this function well and indeed most do not offer it at all.

To be fair, DAB coverage in the UK is generally good but there are some areas of poor or non-existent reception. The UK government is keen to switch off FM broadcasting and re-use the spectrum but has given a commitment that this will not occur until the BBC has ensured that DAB coverage is at least equivalent to that of FM. In practice a digital radio switchover seems to be several years away, especially given that DAB radios are still relatively uncommon in vehicles.

As always in radio, good reception starts with the antenna. DAB is transmitted on different frequencies from FM (approximately 218-225MHz for UK multiplexes) and in principle it therefore requires a differently sized antenna. In practice, existing car antennas may work reasonably well provided they are passive, i.e. do not have some form of FM/AM tuning network or amplifier stage associated with them. Unfortunately many modern vehicles have active or amplified antennas, especially those which make use of the front or rear screen heating elements, and these will need specialist attention to make them capable of DAB reception.

Glass-mount antennas are a possible alternative but they generally do not work well and should be avoided wherever possible. Amongst other things, a VHF antenna of the form used in vehicles should ideally be mounted over what is known as a ground plane - in a perfect world it would be sited at the centre of the vehicle's roof - and a glass-mount antenna by definition cannot be. The best approach is undoubtedly to have a dedicated DAB antenna fitted to the vehicle, either as a replacement for the existing AM/FM antenna or supplementary to it.

HERE

It looks like they will be turning analogue off in a few years so if you are intending keeping it long term then DAB is your only option.

I will just upgrade with an add-on box when the time comes

You might need a new aerial - try it on the standard one first though, you might be lucky.

My truck has a standard DIN connector and it has fitted three different head units with no mods or adapter needed.

You can see the one I've just fitted IN THIS POST

All the basic functions worked just by plugging into the DIN plug in the truck - I've had to add a digital TV aerial and subwoofer adapters though - but the normal functions are all contained in the DIN plug.

The big problem comes if a previous has butchered the wiring.

If you need an adapter then Halfords have loads.

The big problem is if the standard aerial doesn't work - I spent a whole day and three different aerials before I found the best place to mount my TV aerial - but that's TV and it's harder than DAB to get right.

I've got a DAB unit in mine.  Complete rubbish for reception, even with a roof mounted aerial, all fitted by professional installers.  I shouldn't bother with it till they amplify the signal significantly.  It's going back this week for them to have another look at.

My wife has it in her car and there are some good stations on there IMO. I'm not far from the Humber Bridge and reception is good but there are certain areas near me where signal drops in and out but it's not too bad. I'm pretty impressed with it so i'm going to get it put into my shogun. I was looking through the internet not long ago and came across this:-
http://www.justconnectme.co.uk/justdrive-digital-radio-dab-car-adaptor/

I'm hoping somebody local to me can do a similar installation as i think that is expensive, but if i go for one i want something on the lines of this as i'm happy with the original radio that is fitted.

I've got a dab radio in my van and on the whole it's pretty good there are a couple of black spots where I lose reception but in those places I lose reception on the local fm radio station and my phone!
It was previously fitted in my XR2 and I had no problems with it in that either

If you have poor reception on a static dab radio, say at work .... Like me in my workshop unit the antenna snapped so I just put a length of 15mm copper tube over what was left of the antenna ( about 4ft) and now it's better than original!

Also to my surprise, it tried it in my sprinter van, using an 12 v up to 240v to power it ( cheap inverter from eBay ) and the same deal with the copper pipe , trip to hull from Scunthorpe with no probs
