If your transmission is anything like a MK1, then you can't drive with a prop shaft removed, as the transfer case oil will drain from it's out shaft apertures. Depending on which prop is removed, you would need to blank one or the other off to retain the oil.

In uk it can be a mk2(like my sig pic or square/wide arch model) or a mk3,both if they have super select can be driven in 4h on the road. There are a few mk2s that dont have super select and iirc it might be from india..........so if super select you ok for driving(like a range rover with permanent 4wd basically).

It could possibly be on top of box(centre console) with this removed, you can check the 4wd stick and make sure nothing has come detached etc.

Just a thought, with the clunk it sounds mechanical...............

So if SS 4h is fine, also if you do want 2h then front prop could be removed but imho no need if my presumptions are correct.

MPG etc is almost N/A ,hardly any difference as everything is turning anyway, just not under load if makes sense and get a little more road noise.

This would make more sense its a mk3 and the the actuator motor has gone wrong
as it has its postion cam plate on the back of motor, these corrode and loose contact.
