Sad story is I have been burgled and robbed and am trying to press an old XP computer into use. Thought it a good opportunity to try UBUNTU. I downloaded 14.04 and also saved it to a flash drive. Because of our as advertised "BLISTERINGLY FAST" internet speeds, 250 Kbs Yes you read it right Kilobits it took app 6 Hrs to download. Problem is when I try to install I get message, To open this file  windows needs to know etc. Suggested programs do not seem appropriate.
Help me to Install please.
All help appreciated.

You will have burn it and run from the disc to try it out. If you like it you can then install it on your PC and it will give you an option for which OS system you want to boot from - either XP or Ubuntu after installation.

To get it to run from the disc on boot up you will have to go into the BIOS to make your Disc drive the first option for booting your PC. To get into the BIOS keep pressing the delete key after you start your PC. If it won't run from the disc then it is probably corrupted and you will have to download it again.

I have tried Ubuntu on and off for a couple of years and have recently tried the Mint version which is a lot more user friendly if you are used to Windows. If you have to download it again I would go for the Mint version.

When you download Ubuntu it is usually an .iso file. This is an image of the disc.

I think XP has the necessary software to burn it, you can google to find out how or look for some free disc burning software. I just had a quick google and came across this if it helps.
