Hi all, new to the forum and also new to Shogun ownership.
I bought a 1995 Shogun 3.0 V6 LWB the other day. Love it so far, it's just what we needed, but have a quick question.
Should the 4 buttons on the outer part of the clocks(Demister, cruise, rear fog, can't remember the last one) be back lit at all? When they're pressed the small light comes on to say they're on, but as they're not back lit it makes finding them in the dark in the first place a bit difficult?
Maybe they're meant to be like this, I'm not sure? |

Hi Gav,
Sadly they are mean't to be like this, only the small 'ON' light comes on, it is a bit of a pain sometimes to find the correct switch...

The switches on my 1998 light up. Not sure how much of a job it would be but if any switches are the same function you could swap them for later ones. If the wiring isn't there for illumination you'd have to provide this. The rear foglight switch is definitely different, it took me ages to find the wiring diagram for mine as it changed with the facelift. |

Mine illuminate - and have a "on" light as well.
I've taken a lot of MkII switches apart and all the ones I've seen have backlights.
I changed the backlight bulbs in mine to blue LED
Not the clearest picture - but you can see they are illuminated. |

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll take one out tomorrow and see if there's a backlight in there. Thought it was a bit strange for them all to be out though, that's why I was assuming they maybe weren't meant to go on in the first place?
I've ordered all red LEDS for the clocks anyways so will have a good look when I'm replacing them. |

It is possible to open the switches - there is a tab on each side - use a small screwdriver to lever the sides of the switch and it will come into two halves.
..... then you can pick up the little copper contacts, coil springs and and tiny 2mm ball bearings
I've just opened one of my spare switches.
Two bulbs - one for background illumination and one for the indicator light. |

The bulbs are fastened into a rubber base so they just pull off two pins in the switch.
The bulbs are in different positions in different switches but basically the same idea. |

I used 2mm LEDs - but you have to put a 470 ohm resistor in one of the leads.
Bulbs are easier to fit - "grain of wheat" bulbs work. Just pull off the bulb in it's holder - remove the old bulb by straightening the wires in the rubber holder - place new bulb in holder and bend wires and cut to size.
Then slide the holder onto the brass pins in the switch.
It is fiddly and the bulbs are a tight fit. It's VERY easy to lose some of the springs and contacts when opening some of the switches.
There are a couple of switches that have bulbs in a twist holder that can be removed without dismantling the switch - the Aerial switch and the front screen defroster iirc.

I think that 90% of the bulbs in them are blown!
I've converted quite a few to LED but each switch takes about 30 minutes to do because a resistor has to be fitted - and once converted they cannot ever be returned to using bulbs. |

14V 60mA 3mm bulbs are what you need for most switches. Backlighting bulbs are usually 14V 100ma 3mm or 5mm, but 3mm bulbs work fine.
Something like these - that's £3.89 for 10 bulbs. 39p a bulb is significantly better than buying them in holders from places like Halfords for £2 or more... |

Those switches and the heater controls have been on my to-do list for the last 5 years or so.
I've got quite good at stabbing randomly at the heater controls in the dark to demist the windows. And only rarely put the hazard lights on rather than the rear screen demister |
