The Coke contains Phosphoric Acid - the same stuff you find in rust converters like Jenolite.

It converts the rust (iron oxide) into iron phosphate which protects from further rusting.

Once the chrome layer has been breached by rust then it will only be a temporary fix.

I hate chrome so I painted mine Satin black

It's in very small concentrations - but it also works for descaling kettles!

Just think what its doing to your guts, add the nine spoons of sugar it contains and ask "why do people drink it".

All the 'magic' cleaning things that cola can do can be achieved by just using any dilute acid without all the sugar, colourings and flavourings. There's nothing special about it. You'll find vinegar or orange juice just as effective. Though the fizzing action helps remove anything the acid has dissolved.

And as said above, all putting an acid on chrome plated things does is remove the chrome revealing the shiny steel below. The whole point of chrome plating steel is to protect the steel from the air so it doesn't rust. I'd rather have a thin coating of chrome with slight porosity that's allowing a little rust to form which can be polished off easily, than strip it all off and then have to treat the rusty bumper on a regular basis.

Mainly kids and 'cos they are stupid or ignorant. Coke/Pepsi = gut rot in a bottle. Personally I've never been into fizzy drinks because they are too sweet and contain a plethora of everything that's bad for you.

No wonder in the UK, US and France the obesity rate is so high, you see them leaving McDo's like a school of Beluga whales.  Laughing

Outside of the US the fastest growing McDo's market is ....................... France.  Rolling Eyes and fast food outlets abound here. Good French food in restos is a myth these days, most is utter rubbish  Laughing

The phosphoric acid won't damage your stomach because your stomach is full of concentrated hydrochloric acid anyway.

It will soften tooth enamel though - and allow bacteria to use the sugar from the drink to cause tooth decay.

Even fizzy water softens tooth enamel - the carbon dioxide in the fizz dissolves in the water and forms carbonic acid - which is a lot weaker than phosphoric acid but it is still an acid.

In defence of McDonalds UK - they have radically changed their menus and marketing in the last 10 years or so in response to health concerns and falling revenues.

In fact it's perfectly possible to eat a reasonably balanced, low calorie, low sugar meal there these days. In fact my lunch yesterday was a Festive Chicken Deluxe with BBQ Sauce, garden salad and Sprite Zero - under 500 kcal and 13g of sugar.  That's less than you'd find in a lot of supermarket pre-packed sandwiches. Even something like a Fillet-o-Fish and small fries or a Big Mac, salad and diet coke are still under 600 kcal. It's just a matter of thinking about what you're eating a bit. If you go for a bigger burger, don't have fries. Salad takes time to eat and helps make you feel full for longer. And yes - avoid the sugary drinks. Burger King have also changed their menu in a similar manner.

Yes, I am trying to lose weight (quite successfully) at the moment, and there's a brand new McDonalds opened just across the road from work which is far too convenient.

Sadly most of the kids over here eat and drink the worst in McDos although there are half decent options available. The worst people seem to be the 30's who have suffered the fast food experiences too much and many are gross mum's with gross children. It's not McDos or any other fast food outlet's fault it's the peoples fault for stuffing their faces with the wrong foods.

I eat McDos, burger and frites, but not regularly and not excessively usually followed by a simple black coffee. There's very little excess on my frame even at 69.
