Hi all, just joined to see if I can get some expert help. My pinin 1.8MPi doesn't run properly when cold. It seems to loose power then surge on a hard press of the accelerator, it's fine once it warms up. I've cleaned the throttle body but no change. Just wondered what to check next, there are no fault codes stored. Thanks in advance Richard

Hi - welcome to the club.

There are not many Pinin experts on here I''m afraid.

The best I can suggest is trying to find where the cold start mechanism is - there must be one - and check that it is working properly.

There is some info about the engine coolant temp sensor HERE that maybe will put you on the right track.

Thanks very much for your reply, the engine temp sensor has been changed, i understand there is a coolant sensor too. I had a full diagnostic carried out which turned up nothing, bit of a mystery, trust me to buy such a rare car!  Rolling Eyes

I had a 2L one a few years back - but it was only two years old when i bought it so I never had to do any work on it.

It was a lovely car though.

I would change the coolant sensor and see if that helps.

Not too sure what that one does, there's also a barometric pressure sensor I believe, don't know where it is though.

The link above says it controls the fuel/air mixture - so maybe it is running weak when the engine is cold.

An update, it turns out it was the coolant sensor that was changed, not sure where the engine temp sensor is. Did an ecu reset, battery disconnect, then idle for ten minutes, it ran really bad on idle, went for a drive, still a bit rough, idle was then high, about 1500 rpm, settled & smoothed out after a while. Will give it another try when it's cold.

It's a problem with cars that are not common - although I see quite a few round here.

Are there any independent Mitsy specialists near you? A main dealer might be too expensive.

Don't think so, we live too far from most things to be honest. Thinking of trading it in & cutting my losses now.
