Hi all,
Im looking at getting a sport as my next 4x4 after parting with my paj. Im unsure which to go for for the petrol or diesel. What sort of realistic mpg will i get from each engine i've seen the offical figures of 16 and 25 mpg for the 3ltr and 20 and 29 mpg for the 2.5 ltr but what are they like really. I do on average about 6000 mls a year.
Also what are these engines like for reliabilty my old 2.8 was solid never had any problems with it mechanically so hoping that these engines are as good. Lastly what do i need to look out for when going to check these cars out, Known faults?
Thanks in advance

From what I have read on here - the diesel Sports are hard work at motorway speeds because they are high revving.
Also - the Sport doesn't have SuperSelect - so you are stuck in 2WD on tarmac and can only use 4WD on slippy surfaces. That was the thing that stopped me getting a Sport. |

Not sure what sort of age of vehicle you're looking for, or amount of money you've got budgeted, but what about considering a 2.8 Challenger? They've got the same 4M40 diesel+auto+Super Select combination as the Pajero, but share a bodyshell with the Shogun Sport. Getting rare now, but every so often they come up on Ebay. Like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121601241173
(and no, it's not my one. But a virtual twin that's for sale locally to me). |

Thanks for that simon but my budget is 2k max. I've found a 2002 3ltr elegance auto for 2k full history and ive also found a 2002 2.5 equippe with full history for £1900. Just don't know which to go for. not to fussed about having the super select tbh always kept my old paj in 2wd until off roading so the old school system on the sport would be fine. |

I'd go for the petrol any time.
I find the diesels pretty economical... on paper. It's all OK as long as you drive around at pedestrian speeds but once you push them, they use as much fuel as a petrol.
Although I got a GDi, I am not a fan. Too sensitive to fuel quality. Good 3.0 V6 would do any time. |

I have a 2.5TD Warrior with 91k on the clock. Only had it a month and so far so good. It is a bit juicy, but I do have a heavy right foot, something I need to learn to sort! I am very happy with the wagon and would recommend it. It does, however, sound like a coach when starting in the cold - but once it is warm it's fine. |

Petrol every time, it's cheaper at the pump, you don't do massive miles, I've had a 2.8 paj, a 2.5 sport and currently have a 3.0 v6 shogun and fuel wise the difference is nothing until I do a long run then the petrol is much better than the diesels, it's more relaxed on the motorway. And perils are easier and generally way less complicated than diesels. |

Depends. If you compare the DiD to the V6 GDi, yes, the cost of something going wrong on the diesels is
But the V6 GDi also needs careful maintenance.
The old 2.5 TD or 2.8 TD are still very simple engines that are cheap to mend and do not go wrong often. They are of course not efficient. I'd hence go for a V6 3.0 any time for reliability.
As for fuel economy. With my current 3.5GDi LWB, I do approx 20mpg. And I drive it fast. I used more fuel driving a RR Sport diesel recently. |

one thing to consider with the older 2.8's, they can run on bio or veg oil so MPG gets cheaper |

Any old diesel can run on them. But it's not as simple or cheap to run on it |

Thanks for the replies everyone. Been to look at a v6 24v auto elegance today with 180000 mles on the clock. This is backed up by full history, cambelt has recently been done along with a full service and has been looked after very well. Should i be bothered about this mileage or not? The overall condition of the car is good just want to get an idea of how reliable the engine is considering the mileage. One other thing how can i tell if this is a gdi engine?

I have had two of them now, both reasonably high milers. What price do they ask?
