Hi All,
I used to get around 350 - 400 miles to a tank whether solo or towing a 1700kg twin axle caravan, the truck is regularly serviced.
I've noticed that I'm now getting around 300 miles per full tank, experienced loss of power on hills and the engine management light kept coming on, so took it to a diesel diagnostic specialist, the fault turned out to be over boosting from the actuator sticking (I'm no mechanic).
Problem solved so I thought, the engine management light no longer comes on but still got poor mpg towing and seems a little sluggish on pull away and hills.

Would adjusting the turbo help or is it being caused by something else.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated, don't want to keep shelling out for diags.

Cheers,
Jase

Check the hoses around the turbo and intercooler for splits or leaks. Make sure your intercooler isn't damaged (or full of oil).

What's the best way to test the hoses, as they don't appear to be visually split

Drove it solo the weekend and returned 23 mpg, which I'm pleased with, but still only 18 towing.

If one of the turbo hoses was split, is it possible that it would only be noticeable under the load of towing?.

I don't really want to replace all hoses for the sake of one, but after a visual test none appear to be split, is there any test that can be done other than a visual inspection.

Your economy is back inline with its original figures but you cannot possibly expect to get 23 mpg towing a 1700kg caravan if you are only doing 23mpg solo.

That's what I would have expected but that's what I was getting before the problem started, which I was surprised at but more than happy with

I'm more concerned at the lack of power than consumption at the moment, so any suggestions will be much appreciated

Is it very dead taking off till you hit 1500-2000rpm?

It's sluggish pulling away in 1st solo, and have to rev it to the point of nearly spinning the wheels to pull away with the van on.
I've had the turbo checked and is OK.

I seen a case with similar problem, dead out till revs built up. Got plugged in and was diagnosed as a boost sensor. One of the two at the back of the cylinder head.

Would that be a standard diags test?
Seems strange how it's OK solo, but gutless when towing

Thanks Podge,
I have had diags run while towing, it was reading 1.9 on the flat and between 1.4 and 1.7 on inclines (sorry can't remember what the measurement is).
Would this lean towards the turbo or possibly something less expensive.
The reason for asking is that a mate had the same problem when towing, replaced the turbo and still had the problem afterwards and never got round to resolving it, so I don't want to fork out for a new turbo and still have the problem.
