Having a bit of a nightmare with my 2.8 pajero.
A couple of months ago it decided not to start while at the shops despite having been fine on the way to the shops. Anyway I took the starter motor off and changed the solenoid and it then worked when bench tested.
Refitted it today and still no start. Not even any effort from it. The dash lights come on and I can hear a relay click from the drivers footwell area when the key is in the crank position.
Any ideas? Park inhibit? I cleaned what I think was the connection for this.
Batteries are both charged too. |

Update. Will crank and start no bother if I bridge the solenoid with a screwdriver.
The small wire to the solenoid seems to have no voltage to it when ignition on or in crank position. This is surely the issue?
Where does this wire run to? Is it on a fuse circuit? |

Is it an automatic gearbox? |

I hope this helps - it's from the 1994 electrical manual.

Yeah it's an automatic. I think it gives me an avenue to explore anyway. Am I right in saying that if I join the blu/blk wire from the park inhibitor together it should bypass and therefore eliminate this as a possible fault? |

Yep - that would bypass the inhibitor. At least then you would know if it is that which is causing it. |

Also - check if you have power coming out of the ignition switch - the blue/black wire should be 12V in the start position.
There is also that 40A fusible link to check. |

There is a solinoid for the starter just by the battery's just to the rear of the glow plug solinoids, looks like a round black button. |

Yeah I'll check the blue/black wire in a few places for voltage and possibly just run a wire from it to the solenoid and bypass the inhibitor.
Regarding the "solenoid" near the batteries? Is that not a relay? |

Right. I have a yellow/black wire at the ignition barrel that's 0v at "ON" and 12v at "START".
Beside the batteries I have 2 round relays with rubber covers. Only one of these has a blue/black wire to it. This wire has 11v all the time even with the key out of the ignition.
Whats next? |

All other wires at the 2 relays either show 0v all the time or show 12v at "ON" but drop to 0v at "START" |

Looking at the wiring diagram, the auto doesn't have a relay - that is only present on the Manual transmission and looks like it is connected to the clutch pedal.
Although I have two relays there - one is the glowplug relay but I've not done anything with the other so I'm not at all sure what it is for. It maybe a starter relay because these wiring diagrams are not always totally accurate.
I would ignore them for now - can you get to the blue/black wires on the gearbox inhibitor switch and join them together?. If that doesn't make it work then we can look at that relay. |

I cant see anything of the inhibitor other than the plug maybe.
I was actually thinking just take a feed off the ignition via a 12v relay to the starter. |

If you can see the plug then try to follow the wire back from it till it is a bit more accessible - then you could remove a bit if insulation from each of them and connect them together.
There is a post HERE that shows the switch. Apparently there is a cable on it that can be adjusted - so it maybe just need some adjustment to make it work. |
