What happens when you press in the switch on the side of the gear lever? The 'O/D off' light should come up and then go off again in sequence.  So just wondering if the dash indicator bulb might have failed and it's actually in 'O/D off' mode without you knowing it.

Is the speedo working OK? A failed speedo can cause the overdrive to malfunction.

Is the 'kickdown' cable properly adjusted? Have a search on here - plenty of info about it.

Then there's the overdrive solenoid valve and associated wiring.

These auto boxes are pretty bullet-proof. It's much more likely to be something external to be gearbox than internal.

If you want to do some diagnosis yourself, I can let you have a link to the autobox workshop manual. It's for a later model year (2000 > 2002), but it's valid as far as I know.

Possibly! Or is there an auto-box specialist in Glasgow?

Another alternative would be to make contact with V8 Rick. I'm sure that he goes up to Scotland for jobs, and he knows these trucks like the back of his hand. He'd be my first port of call, I reckon.
Here's a link to send him a message: V8 Rick
