Dear All

Need some advice. I have a MK1 shogun LWB and it has drum brakes at the rear. The mechanic has said that you can change the axle which has disc Brakes already on.

Please can you confirm if this can be done?
Will I need to change the brake servo or would the same one do?
Would changing from drum brakes to disc brakes make a difference as the brakes are not as strong (mechanic says it will make a big difference (a lot better braking)  but I need a 2nd opinion)
Finally, is changing the axle a big job?

Thanks in advance

Many thanks

I've changed the rear axle in mine, but it was like for like swap. It is just a nuts and bolts job really, remove the radius arms, pahnard rod, handbrake cables and brake pipes. Undo prop bolts and pull the axle out, It weighs a tonne.

You may need to be careful to source an axle with the correct ratio, otherwise you could end up mismatched, might be worth your while getting the prop from the donor too so it doesn't cause any issues

Or you could take out the shafts and hubs and do the swap that way, not too sure what the deal is with the brake servo though

I would have thought that the servo would be OK - the rear discs are more efficient than drums so they would grip better even with the original servo.
