got this in an email from a friend.

Machinist’s Workshop” recently published information on various penetrating oils. The magazine reports they tested these products for “break out “torque” on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of popular penetrating oils, with the unit of merit being the torque required to remove the nut from a “scientifically rusted” bolt. Average torque load to loosen nut:
No Oil used ……………………516 foot pounds
WD-40 ………………… ……..238 foot pounds
PB Blaster …………………….214 foot pounds
Liquid Wrench ………………….127 foot pounds
Kano Kroil …………………….106 foot pounds
ATF/Acetone mix…………………. 53 foot pounds
The ATF/Acetone mix is a “home brew” mix of 50/50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note this “home brew” released bolts better than any commercial product in this one particular test.
Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that Liquid Wrench is almost as good as Kroil for 20% of the price.
ATF/Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a50/50 mix. ATF = Any type of Automatic Transmission Fluid.
This version of the story was in one of the Military Vehicle Club newsletters.

WD40 isn't a very good lubricant anyway.

+1 for plusgas, i only have wd40 in the house for the kids to use on their scooters else they would use half a can of plusgas every time they use it......

If i run out of plusgas i have a spray bottle with diesel in it, takes a bit longer to soak in but does just as good a job...

This is an old story, and very USA centric. The full article states that the item was submerged in the penetrating oil for a set amount of time.

Yes, whilst various homebrew solvents can work well for a given job, there isn't the convenience factor of just having a can on the shelf. Also the ability for an aerosol to spray the oil directly where it's needed and not cover everything around it can't be overstated when dealing with stuck bolts in some places.

PlusGas for me too.

I intend changing my top wishbones this summer - an aerosol of PlusGas can hit those nuts and bolts from about two feet away.

Been spraying them every week for ages !

Heat and cold can be more effective than a penetrating oil once the corrosion has gone beyond a certain point. And there's always Mr. Angle Grinder Smile

Assassin Male or female? or a mix if the two.

I have always used oil and Kerro mixture. But like them all you have to give it time.

Either will do, or mix them if you like.
