So for a laugh I thought I'd phone my local dealership to get an idea of prices for doing some work on the Pajero.

Diagnostics - 2 hours - £75 + vat per hour! lol £180 to be told what a fault light means! I'll be doing that myself then

Waiting on a price for doing a replacement key coded to the immobiliser but was told labour for that will be £45 for 30mins work.

I didn't even bother with transmission related stuff....

When I had a BMW a few years ago i'm sure their hourly rate was not that high

And they still charge you for the work even if they don't manage to fix it.

Explains why every time I pop into the dealership it is dead... Guess there is no appetite for fixing cars outwith warranty now (or perhaps no skillset for older motors).

It reminds me of the time I took my 1995 MR2 into a certain Falkirk based Toyota dealer in 2009 for a new clutch which is a right PITA to do on a mid-engineered car. They spent a couple of days taking the rear subframe to bits and pulling the gearbox apart then realised they didn't know what they were doing and had to get an external party in to finish it and put it together. Lucky it was a set price as they effectively spent a week working on it lol.

Now i'm not a huge fan of Vauxhalls but they seem to have the right idea. Vauxhall do a Masterfit members card which is free so you get 50% of MOT's and 25% of parts and labour charges which is pretty good for older cars. Our local Evans Halshaw were slightly cheaper than independents when i had work done on it over the last year or so and they are always busy.

Mine went to Holt Mitsubishi in Derby for the Pitman Arm recall.

I only took it because it was free parts and labour but most of the "technicians" in there looked younger than my truck! They did the work OK but managed to break one of my locking wheel nuts and stuck the end on with glue - shows how much they care about quality of work these days.

Luckily the bit they stuck on fell off on my drive and I noticed it so they paid for a new set after quite an argument with them.

I just got the feeling that they only want to do the work if the computer can tell them exactly what sensor needs changing - which is a problem on a 20 year old diesel as it hasn't got an ECU.

Luckily there is an independent Pajero specialist near me - he is expensive but at least he knows about these older trucks.
