when the car is in drive but sat at lights or in park the whole car vibrates. Not severely but enough to be uncomfortable. The idle is fine hot or cold it's like sitting in an old transit van . Any ideas anyone??

How many miles has it done? Any knowledge of its service history? It could be various bearings in the engine are worn, or engine/gearbox mounts.

It's done 161K but has an excellent history engine is quiet when running well as quiet as a diesel can be Was told it might just need a tune up ie the pump timing etc

When vibrating, what are the engine revs ?  If too low, then the engine will vibrate.

Anything outside vibrate? The Pajero I got as a donor vibrated abnormally. You could actually see vibration in the front tyres while it was stationary. Don't know what it was as took it to bits. although the chassis was bent close to the engine mount so that may have been it.

I did notice that the torque converter is balanced with weights round the edge. Maybe some come off? Just a stab really I don't understand torque converters, manual is my style.

It's a weird one the thing starts fine and drives fine  just vibrates in park or drive but stood still been told there's a sensor or something that controls the engine vibration

2.8's don't have a knock sensor.

Other than the suggestions I already made I am out of ideas without seeing it running.

When did it start?

I'd inspect the engine and gearbox mountings looking in particular for torn rubbers or metal to metal contact.

Gonna do that and if I can't see anything wrong there I'm gonna drop it in a Shogun/Pajero specialist near to where I live. The old girl pulls and drives well smokes a touch until she's warm then nothing just this vibration ???

Its no big deal, lots of them do this its just the idle speed is reduced in drive to a point where it shakes a bit, mine did it too and yes it is bloody annoying BUT oh so easily fixed  Very Happy

With it parked and the handbrake on tightly and engine running stick in drive and then adjust the idle speed up until it idles smoothly, job done.

It maybe a tad faster when its in park or neutral but who cares, you dont spend all your time in the truck sitting still in P or N all the time....
