Hi Everyone.

I'm after a bit of advice about my Challenger, not had it long and hoping I haven't bought a ringer  Sad

I've got this issue with the A/T light flashing on the dashboard, now it comes on and goes off when you start the engine as it should, it doesn't show when idling or revving the engine in neutral.  It only starts flashing when I start driving and am gently accelerating, if I take the foot off the accelerator it goes out, by contrast if I boot the accelerator it goes out.  I've been doing some troubleshooting today, and I might have found the reasons already, but just wanted to post in case someone else points something out that I haven't thought of.  So here is what I've done today:

- checked the ATF, was brown rubbish and level low
- flushed and replaced the ATF fluid in the car today brought it up to the full mark
- first thing I noticed is the sump guard is filthy with oil on the underside
- noticed the pipes from the oil cooler are very oily
- after replacing the ATF ran the car and light still flashing
- annoyed I cracked on with my other job of replacing the engine oil
- when doing the engine oil I noticed that there was new ATF on the pipes coming out of the oil cooler
- inspected the oil cooler through the bumper and leak seems to be coming from the pipe that goes from the oil cooler to the rad ( I think )
- when replacing the oil filter noticed a line of new ATF on the gearbox sump
- I didn't take off the sump when I changed the ATF as I couldn't be arsed to take off the crossmember

So basically I need to investigate the leak on the sump and hopefully it is coming from the sump gasket, in which case I will have to remove the sump and replace the gasket, and clean the magnets whilst i'm at it.  If the leak is coming from elsewhere i'm going to be worried.

I need to get the bumper off and check the oil cooler and see if the leak is a pipe or the cooler itself and look to replace either.

Another issue I have which after reading some posts on here makes me think it could be related is my speedo, If I drive off the speedo 9 times out of 10 wont move, I have to give the top of the dash a good smack and then it will jump into life, I think this is just a loose connection on the back of the speedo but read that the gearbox uses this and a/t light could be a factor of that but i'm not sure.

So if anyone out there has anything else they think I could check then please chip in.  If my gearbox is toast... better start playing the lottery basically.

Should probably also mention, this is 97 2.8TD Auto

Despite all this the only actual issue when driving is the light flashing in my face, the gearbox seems to operate fine, changes smoothly, kickdown works, overdrive works.

cheers everyone. Got a can of stella now to help my sorrow

ok i dont know these trucks too well so take anything i say with a pinch of salt - but could the atf on the sump have travelled there from the leak at atf cooler pipe you mentioned ?

also is there a filter in the sump on yours ? if youre atf was looking rough it could easy have a clogged filter which might cause your yellow light

idk just making suggestions really

Hi Mate,

thanks for the reply, its entirely possible it travelled down the hose, and to be honest if it did i'd be relieved!  I need to clean it all off tomorrow and have a good dig around.

As for the filter, its the same gearbox as the pajero, if i'm right there is no filter but just a gauze and some magnets.  I'm probably being punished for being too lazy to remove the sump    Evil or Very Mad

ha sorry idk on gbox ,,, this is only the second shogun ive owned and both have been manuals !

keep your chin up ,,, these autobox cooler pipes give up the ghost on many models/makes and often arent too bad to fix cost wise

thanks mate, since I bought it I've had these gearbox related warnings and issues, and they stop me driving it, so it spends all its time on the driveway.  I want to drive it and enjoy it, but don't want the gearbox to blow up, so i'm trying my best to fix the issues as I find them, trouble is I fix one and find three more   Evil or Very Mad

it works fine, I mean i'm comfortable driving it, it doesn't seem to have an issue with the way it performs.  so that makes me think it is more of an electrical problem.  obviously the leak needs addressing but the light is doing my head in at the moment.

defo better to tackle the major issues now though before really using it the way youre doing ,,, it can be depressing but sometimes youll save lots of money with some pre emptive maintenance ,,, many ppl ignore the warning lights and just stop driving the car when it cant be driven anymore ,, far better to tackle it earlier imo

Yeah agree with you on that, don't want to have to change the gearbox hense why I don't use it at the moment except when driving it to see if what I did fixed the issue, other than that it is parked just making my house look awesome but nothing more  Laughing

i'm also going to try removing the battery to reset the ECU, I didn't think it even had an ECU but apparently it does.

Does the odometer function all the time even if the speedo doesn't? It sounds to me like the speedo malfunction is an issue local to the instrument cluster, which I don't think will affect the gearbox. The speedo on my Challenger is also intermittent, but I know the cause is a poor connection with the screws that hold the speedo in place and also carry the signal from the PCB.

Took her for a run after replacing the engine oil, speedo didn't work so refrained from giving it the usual wake up call, and yes the odometer does still count up, so yeah does seem local to the instrument panel.

Just an update on this as ongoing jobs when I get a chance to work on the old girl, hope the weather is better tomorrow!  So I've had the front grill off today and degreased the mess that was my oil cooler.  After degreasing it and cleaning it up, ran the motor for a bit to check for leaks.  The ATF is leaking from the top pipe in the side of the oil cooler, on tickover it wasnt much, i could catch it by poking it with some tissue and its red so definitely gearbox blood.

I then ran through all the gear positions and reversed her out the garage and after doing so i could see a nice line of ATF making its way down the pipe so this appears to be my culprit (or one of them).  The connection is a little strange to me, it has a kind of rounded end going into a piece that could be had with a spanner.  Are there any kind of ring gaskets in this connection that could be replaced?  maybe the pic below will help show what i mean

There should be copper washers on either side of that banjo bolt. Easily solved.
