I'm attempting to fit a secondhand fuel pump to my paj, I've read as many posts as I can an had a lot of advise from a few members already,my problem is not fitting the pump but understanding the pump itself ,the pump timing is out not sure which way if anybody could run me through the symptoms for being a tooth out each way so I no what I'm listening or looking for an hopefully I can correct it |

If the timing is advanced:
noise (diesel clatter)
white smoke (or grey) especially when cold
missing under certain load conditions
slow down shudder
If it's retarded:
smooth and quiet (too quiet)
black smoke
hard to start
missing under certain load conditions
slow down shudder
Best to align it as per instructions in the 4M40 workshop manual. The timing may need to be adjusted by means of a dial gauge. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI_iV4nlEq0 |

Am I right in thinking that when the pump is fitted I line the tooth on the gear wheel with the notch on it with the t mark when I insert the pump the gear is moving so its a tooth out is this normal or should I move it back a tooth before fitting so when it's in it line up with the t mark |

Yes, pump gearwheel notch should align with the T mark on the flange plate. Then the gearwheel rotates as you push the pump into place.
You've probaby got the workshop manual, but just in case you haven't:
