Hi,
Further to my previous post about changing the battery, this was done as there was a problem starting. Had to hold starter on for at least 3 seconds before it caught, testing of old battery showed it was pretty knackered. Brand new one fitted, 700 amps of cranking power. Problem I now have is even though starter sounds a lot more powerful it still takes a few seconds to catch. Is this a starter motor problem or a fueling issue?
Cheers,
Iain |

Doesnt seem to be fuel issue, filter is always full and no indication there is a blockage, runs and drives ok. Glow plugs are a possibility, no smoke when it eventually starts though. Could the starter be missing some teeth, taking longer to catch?

That would make a horrible grating sound. |

I agree. Get your pump tested.
No smoke when it starts? If you pump was working normally it would smoke when it eventually started because of unburnt fuel in the cylinders |

Its a funny one as the motor was in the garage getting some work done and the battery died, garage stuck a booster on it and off it went first turn of the key, fired straight away. Once booster was off it was back to struggling again, hence I bought a new battery as garage thought old one was knackered. Sounds better when starting but refuses to fire for at least 2 seconds, sometimes 3. Regards smoke, theres never anything noticable, odd puff but nothing you wouldnt expect, no plumes etc.
Cheers,

When mine had a faulty pump it too took 2 secs of cranking to start. It also had two open circuit glowplugs but replacing them didn't affect the cranking/starting which surprised me.
Are there any other running problems at all? |

I would suggest changing your fuel filter first, this time of year the agglerometer collects a lot of water and this can partially fill the fuel filter if it isn't drained and freeze during cold weather.
From my experience this is the first sign and I have seen it on numerous shoggys, filter change has always cured it. |

Hi,
Runs/drives fine once started. Would think there would be more problems if the pump was on the way out? Ihave had the fuel filter off and there was nothing noticable in the bottom of it, I will change the filter for new and think I'll do the glowplugs as well, both are slighlty cheaper than a pump!!
Have been told a recon pump was fitted prior to me getting it and guy had the old pump sitting he said was knackered, might have just been a second hand pump fitted though, cant afford to take it too bits just now as using it every day
Cheers,

I had the same symptoms and feared the dreaded pump failure. I replaced the battery as it was old and winter was coming, and although improved it still would take a few seconds to start when hot, then the starter motor died. I have replaced the starter motor and now it starts in a split second in all conditions. Mine has 105K on the clock and original starter motor so not surprised it was worn out.

Im not convinced its the pump. With battery and booster pack it starts instantly. Need a dry day to get it looked at
