Can anyone offer some advice? The wipers won't move on the windscreen but when I pull them off the screen the motor turns them OK. It seems the motor has lost much of its power.

Or your linkage has stiffened up? With the motor detached can you manually sweep the wipers over the screen? If not you will probably just need to remove the scuttle panel and grease up the joints

Fingers crossed its as simple as that, although fitting a replacement motor is not expensive nor difficult either

Thank you, I'll have a go at greasing the joints. What is the scuttle panel and how is it removed? Sorry about these questions but I've never attempted anything like this before. I very much appreciate your advice.

Scuttle plate is the panel immediately in front of the windscreen. If you lift your bonnet you will see half a dozen or so small bolts, remove them all and carefully lift out the panel to expose the wiper linkage...

Thanks again but I could not find the dozen small bolts. There are three bolts securing the wiper motor to the bulkhead but few other bolts and there is nothing resembling a scuttle plate. My car is a 1989/1990 Mitsubishi Shogun V6 petrol auto.

The mk1 is slightly different to the mk2 but the principle is the same. The scuttle panel is he thin panel that sits between the windscreen and the bonnet that has vents and the wiper spindles poking through. With the bonnet open you will be able to see the bolts in the gutter area of the panel...

First identify the bolts holding the plate with the wiper motor attached, then identify the cover plate on the same plane but directly below the left hand wiper arm mounting. Remove this plate too. Squirt a little thickish oil onto each swivel joint and try again.

If still not wiping on a wet screen, remove both wiper arms and the cover over the bush. Squirt oil into the spindle, run the wiper motor to allow the oil to penetrate the bush.

Reassemble and test again, should be ok now..

Hi pintofbest, glad you sorted that out.

Quote .............  We've owned our brilliant Shogun for over twenty years.........

20 year ownership is a great record.  We've had our 88/89 lwb for 18 years and covered close to 200 000 km since it's arrival from Japan as a used truck. Super capable and reliable.
