the rear brake lights and sometimes indicators seem very erratic on our 1998 LWB shogun, when they stop lighting up, quite often a thump on the front of the clusters will make them work again

i've done all the usual cleaning up of bulb and bulbholder contacts, bending in slightly to make better contact etc, but it's still doing it...

any ideas?

MOT next week so better get it sorted now!

Cheers

Jim

Have you tried it with different bulb? Could be on it's way out.

Have a look at the wiring behind the lights. Look for signs of tape and poor joints from towbar electrics. You may or may not have a towbar now but chances are there has been one at some time.

Even the official Mitsubishi towbar electrics came with Skotchloks which aren't the best things for wiring exposed to wet. Even if well taped, water gets in eventually and can not only stop the towbar wiring working but will allow the car's wiring to perish.

i checked the wiring a bit further back and came to a multiway connector that had slipped off the lock position, looked like a load of crud in the contacts, so sprayed each side with switch cleaner and pushed in/pulled out a dozen or so times, seems to be ok now, fingers crossed that was it!

All good, that fixed it and it sailed through it's MOT today, thats 3 years now, without anything but a handful of advisories!

so, the solution to intermittant brake and indicators in the rear bumper light clusters is to find the multiway connector about 9 inches down the wire from the lamps, take it apart, spray switch cleaner in both sides, then push back together, and separate again ... do that 4 or 5 times, shake to get rid of any switch cleaner that hasn't evaporated and reconnect for the final time
