|
|
Just brought a caravan home, got out and noticed loads of white frothy bubbles were pissing out of the expansion tank overflow...
Head gasket *beep*?
Have to admit, i've been running without a temp gauge as it stopped working not long back but been keeping an eye on the water but i guess I finally got bitten by complancency today. No water in the pipes at all so probably *beep* the head n all?
Just wondering, is it cost effective to get someone out to fix it or get a new truck?
Need it done asap ideally.
Norwich area. |

A lot depends on how good the rest of the truck is.
My head cracked five years ago and I had it replaced at a local Pajero specialist at a total cost of £1400 including new radiator, thermostat and water pump. It's been fine ever since.
It was worth doing it on mine five years ago because the truck was worth quite a bit more than it is now. But saying that, if it went tomorrow then I would still have it replaced.
If yours is a good truck, and you intend keeping it for quite a while then it may be worth repairing it.
"better the devil you know" than buying another one that maybe also has some unknown problems. |

Was fiddlin around today, just noticed my rad cap has disintergrated and is just all rattly, the springs gone and no seal...
Could this be why the coolantis being pushed out into and out of the expansion bottle?
Would it also make bubbles? |

Yes - if the cap isn't holding the pressure in the system then as the coolant warms and expands it will just be pushed into the expansion tank.

The cap allows a pressure of 0.9 bar in the cooling system - this increases the boiling point of the coolant. So it is possible that not having any pressure could cause the coolant to boil at about 100oC and cause bubbles. Although the temperature shouldn't really be as high as 100oC under normal driving conditions.
In either case - you need to replace the cap ASAP. |
