Hi All,
I have a sick Shogun sport. The last couple of months have seen a few things go wrong with my 51 plate beauty who has served me well for 15 years. The latest was after changing the timing belts and tensioners last weekend. The engine idles runs quite roughly and revs poorly and is spitting un-burnt diesel from the exhaust which indicates a timing issue. I am no means a master mechanic but know my way around the 4D56 quite well. The timing marks on all pulleys and balancer shafts all lined up correctly. I always make a point of rotating any engine I change a belt on by hand to check for interference before starting, confirming all marks continue to line up correctly after a few turns. All the pulleys including crank pulleys have been checked for play / keyway wear in case that is giving a false TDC, but they are in good shape.
I'm at a loss as to what could cause this and if any of you kind people out there have any ideas, I'm listening.
Thanks

Hi Hutchy,
Thanks for the reply. The pump mark lines up perfectly also. I've changed a few of these belts in the past with no problem. I have had a friend look at it an he said it was lined up perfectly on all 3 sprockets.
Thanks,

All,
I now know what is wrong. Number 4 cylinder has low compression. I pulled it all apart and found the small thin circular metal disc in between the two crank pulley sprockets had worn the woodruff key slot and was not indicating TDC properly. It must have been a tooth out. A mechanic friend of mine who has worked for Mitsi said the valves are designed to break causing minimal damage even if you turn the engine by hand.
The stripdown has started! |

All fixed and didn't cost a penny only time. Surprising what you can miss when you are rushing! |

Hi,
No the parts were just fine. Just a large lump of black *beep* blocking the intake manifold, part of it had jammed up in the valve in cylinder 4. Just cleaned it it and away and it started first time. probably need to block the EGR off to stop the formation of the *beep*.
