I have been researching heavily into how fuels burn and how to improve my own veg blend.

My results in a nutshell:

The cetane rating of a fuel is its resistance to ignition, in a similar way petrol has an octane rating As a general rule of thumb, higher is better.

Diesel has a cetane rating of 45-55. An engine should run between 40-60, closer to 60 is best.

Waste veg oil has a cetane rating of 38 ish although it can vary due whats been cooked in it.

2-EHN is a cetane booster, none of that off the shelf *beep* you get at halfords like power boosters/fuel cleaners blah bah blah, but the industry recognised chemical. (which the halfords products contain in a diluted level).

Still with me?

My research led me to believe 30ml of 2-EHN increases diesel 7 cetane points. (how accurate this is is unconfirmed I guess)

So armed with my figures; if I have 25L of filtered veg oil, then I add in 90ml of 2-EHN I theoretically have a cetane rating of 59.

Can anyone input on this?

I use 2-EHN in my mix. Usually 25ml added to 25L. I've no idea how much this actually raises the cetane though, hopefully a noticable amount, but I've never done it without.

Where did you get that 30ml raises by 7 points? Is that 30ml added to 25L?

I think it was you that mentioned 2-EHN before which is why i spent about 2 hours looking into it further to try guesstimate a ratio.

An American website came up, think it was a diesel specialist or something if I remember. As diesel in America is quite poor compared to here as there is not the demand for it. They are pretty far behind with common rail etc. petrol is still king. The cetane rating in north America is only 40 points ish.

I couldn't confirm if veg oil will be as responsive to the chemical, but it gave me something to go on.

If its filtered properly its no issue, the main issue is the mess and time of filtering it. I get it from work for nothing, if I had to pay for it I would proberbly just get ready to go Bio.

The vast majority of plain pump diesel is $hyte these days compared to the stuff supplied when our vehicles were new on the road around twenty years back. The last five or six being especially noticeable for me. I've used the same model non-turbo 2.5 Mitsi engine (two L300 vans) for around twelve years and the same 2.8 turbo LWB Pajero for just over ten years and the vibrations caused by the poor fuel quality have given me major problems. I have had three fill-ups over the years which have obviously been of diesel that is very different to normal and which gave an amazingly smooth running engine, I figure this is probably down to the additive put in the tanker just before it left the refinery (the stuff is so corrosive they don't want it in there long.) I've spent a bit of time looking into it and 2EHN is the answer to my problems and gives a big improvement in reduced vibration felt through the steering wheel & floor (no - it wasn't ball joints / prop shaft / timing / injectors / steering rack /engine mounts / auto box mounts / steering column uj's / shox / wheel bearings font or rear because I've swapped all of those, some several times.

1000 : 1
For a fifty litre tank they recommend 50 mills which is two of the 25ml dispenser measures on the tub I'm using at the moment,  (fifty thousand mills to fifty mills) Not used it long enough to try many different ratios but I do know that 1000 : 1 works.
I will be trying up to 500:1 ratio as they advise for maximum effect.
For poor bio diesel they say up to 350:1

Best money I've spent on driving for ages. If you try it then let us know how you get on.
It's the stuff that Millers use in their additive (but only a small percentage) & smells the same - very toxic so don't get close to it & do wear gloves.

For me it does appear to improve starting and slightly increase mpg, definitely less engine braking on overrun but best of all...  smooth running.

Really helpful nice to see its not only me that's researched so in depth. You have confirmed a few things I already found which is reassuring. Trial and error with the dosage I guess as veg oil will respond differently from diesel.

I found 2ehn on eBay in a 5 litre container.

Very Happy Managed to catch a glimpse of a driver's clipboard t'other day   Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy

He didn't like the idea of me taking a photo (trade secrets) so I just took a mental note but he had 20,000 litres of diesel on board and it had been dosed with 3.87 litres  - He had no idea what the number was about but I was well interested.

I ran out of 2EHN last week Sad  Bad vibration felt in hands & under feet - felt like pins-&-needles after driving for an hour.

Just ordered three X Litre tubs to last a bit longer this time. Also found a better price on ebay with free delivery:

cetane booster

Powerenhancer brand,  75ml per 50 litre tankfull seems somewhere near for the non-turbo 2.5. Not used it yet in the 2.8 because veggie smooths out the vibrations & I've usually got some %age in the pump & pipes for a good few miles after switching the svo off and running the purge system. You can still smell it in the exhaust after ten miles which is more than my usual cycle of 'switchover to diesel to purge, parked, then warm up to switchover onto svo'

I did try 75ml plus a cupful of petrol & it was a nice drive but last week with only the petrol & vibes were back.

Excellent response from the purchase late last night - it's marked as dispatched at 7.12am this morning so should be here for monday  Very Happy

I would have thought the centane booster would be more beneficial in veg oil as it's a lower rating to begin with. Not sure what makes for the smoother running.

It's the smoother running that I'm more interested in - my regular two hour + runs to work & back are a nightmare; toe-end of shoe only on the accelerator, left foot held off the floor or on a rolled up towel, fleece gloves to insulate off the steering wheel. Maybe I'm hyper-sensitive to the vibration but that's only been caused by long term exposure to it. Anything to reduce it is worth doing.
The 2.8 Paj isn't so bad with svo mixed in - other users (not all) report smoother running so probably either a more progressive burn or a slower burn.
