Pipe not pile lol.
Well brother in law has borrowed some device to check if head gasket has gone. Not sure what it was but he had to buy some fluid for it. He said he did the test twice and the head gasket has gone.
*beep*...

The car is immaculate and we looked it up and it's been thr Ugh every MOT first time with no advisorys. Any ideas? eBay has a garage in Barking that will fit a refurbished engine for £1200 with a 6 month guarantee. Any food or do we jus stick on eBay as spares or repair and try and recoup some of the money?

If the car is immaculate, why not consider fitting a new head and gasket?  You're much better off doing this than buying some cheapo refurb of dubious quality.

I fitted a new head gasket to my 2.8 a couple of years ago. It's really not a difficult job. Or there's Mark3 fairly near you in Essex. I'm sure he'd give you a decent quote.

PS Various expletives and other words are 'beeped' out by the software!  Rolling Eyes

No chance of you and your brother-in-law doing it? The procedure is very well covered in the 4M40 (2.8) workshop manual. If you haven't got a copy and  would like one, let me know and I'll PM you with a link.

Replacing the head gasket on mine was much easier than I'd expected.

Hi there

Just wondering did you need to skim your head when you replaced the head gasket?

Louis

The embarrassing truth is that I had to remove the head because a piece of a tool broke off as I was trying to remove old injector washers. So the head was perfectly OK. I has to fit a new gasket and fitted new head bolts whilst I was at it.

Lol im Mark  Very Happy  not Mike  Sad  and im not fully booked, im taking time off of driving all over the world for a few months Very Happy

As per email there is absolutely no way you can know if its the head gasket or the head until its removed and inspected, so depending on what you want to spend and what you think of the vehicle the next step is head removal then go from there when you know exactly what the problem is.

Really appreciate your help. Yes brother in law said he would have to take head off and get it tested or he could get a new head, gasket and bolt set for £585. Plus we'd have to pay him so my wife and I have decided (agonisingly) to just put the car up for sale as spares/repair. Decided not to risk throwing good money after bad... If we got the head done we don't know if the gearbox will pack up etc as we know nothing about the car. It broke down on way home after buying it. Even looked at the company offering to fit a refurbished engine for £1285 but just 6 month warranty. Shame as has caused us a lot of probs as borrowed the money to buy it. Thanks for the advice here though...

That's a real shame, but sometimes it's better to cut your losses rather than risk good money after bad. I hope you have better luck with whatever you get next.

Breaking down on the way home from buying it would suggest, sadly,  the seller knew exactly what was found on with it, out of interest how much did you pay for it and how much you want for it?

That was meant to say "the seller knew exactly what he was doing with it"
