Towing - Swing Plate

Not really up on trailer towing, so could someone tell me what the purpose is of this metal swing plate.  Cheers Jeff

Not overly sure - but the hitch seems to have a sliding bit to operate the brakes on the trailer.

Whe you brake - the weight of the trailer on overrun pushes the sliding bit in and applies the trailer brakes.

Moving the plate as in the second photo stops the slider moving and disables the trailer brakes.


Unless someone know better of course !

You're right Pete.  The plate should be engaged when reversing the trailer to prevent brake engagement.  More modern systems automatically prevent brake engagement when reversing.
