The trip into the peaks of the Pyrennees was awesome, very cold at times, you wouldn't believe how cold in September/October, and very, very remote, in fact we never saw another moving vehicle on our roads so certainly wouldn't want to break down there as many were gravel tracks. No normal mobile signals at all only a satellite telephone reception and very rarely we came into range of any Wifi reception. Many places are covered in snow or ice in the peaks but not an issue. If going there for the first time I would recommend earlier in the year or packs snow socks/chains and be sure to take a sat phone or a lot of tools and spares. Pamplona, San Sebastian and the coastal route to Bilbao were civlised by comparison. For the views alone it's well worth the trip but be sure to take enough diesel as there's no filling stations en route in the mountains. On this occasion we went on different and more remote roads and routes in the mountains which was well worth the extra distances. For the rugged adventurers it is recommended but prepare your truck and kit appropriately before you go. Bon chance. |

We are now planning our next Christmas 2016 trip across to Geneva then onto Yvoire, up into the Alps and meeting pals for a week or two in Chamonix for some skiing and broken bones then a couple of weeks trekking around some of the high alpine villages on snow and ice (not too many takers as most tourists are too windy for that in the snow ........ even in their pretty and shiny 4x4's) and then back to Annecy for some R&R and then trek back across to the CM. All sounds good to me but 4-5 weeks of driving in the snow and ice and no respite ................... sounds like a job for the trusty refurbed D2
Still, someone's gotta do it |
