When the engine is cold, put the multimeter on the Volts range and connect the red lead to the busbar and the black lead to the negative battery terminal.
Get someone to turn on the ignition and you should have approximately 12V showing on the meter for a few seconds.
What truck is it? |

Pete my engine doesn't have a buzz bar
It's got 4 wires connected to each other should I buy a buzz bar
instead of using the wiring |

Other tests you can do:
1) Listen for the click on the passenger side, about 10 seconds after switching on the ignition - that will tell you if the ECU is activating the relay.
2) remove the small wire off the spade connector on the relay and use a long bit of wire to feed 12V from the battery positive terminal to the spade connector. The relay should click and you should get 12V at the busbar. Don't leave the wire on the spade for more that 10 seconds or you will burn out the glow plugs. |

The ecu clicks about a minute or so after turning ignition
on but never heard anything from the relay
I'm thinking it's got to be a cold start problem as this morning
it wasn't for starting |

Do test (2) and see if the relay clicks. |

I would replace the wiring with a buzbar, invariably wiring is susceptible to breaking down over time, at least you can eliminate the wiring from any problems. |

Takes years and years for copper cable to go down the pan yes the connectors/lugs can fall apart but round the plug area should be dry anyways.
I would be tempted to take the plugs out and check them if after you checked the relay and all is ok to the heater plugs. |

Thanks everyone for the reply and information
I've order a new buzbar from mitzy and tomorrow I'm going to
test the old plugs and other components because to be honest
it's worse now than before I changed the glow plugs |

I never implied it would cure it, I suggested removing them would eliminate a possible weak link. As you say it takes years and years to erode, these Mk2's aren't exactly spring chickens ! |

These glow plug wires are not original specifications someone has made them
up but as I bought it in the summer I've not had a problem until a couple of weeks
ago but will go through it all tomorrow |

did you connect your meter/test light to the heater plugs cables/buzz bar and turn ign on as that would tell you straight away if you have a problem with the heater solernoid/relay. |
