How many of us have noticed the amount of carbon build-up on the EGR valve and glow plugs and that it takes up so much of our time to brush and scrubb
it to somewhere near clean?

Neville, a time served mechanic has let me in to a little secret that he doesn't mind sharing with a few.

Purchase a bottle of the branded COLA drink. As you know, not all cola's are the same . They should use that phrase on TV I reckon .
Place any of those such like items into a container.
Completely cover the items with the COLA.
Sit and wait for a while. Finish off what is left in the bottle.
I left my EGR valve and steel pipe for 4 days.

I didn't expect it to come out like new but I was suprised at just how much soot was floating and how much carbon lay in the bottom of the container.

Use an old toathbrush to clean off the excess carbon. Give it a rinse with water. A good spray with Brake & Clutch and allow to completely dry in a warm and dry place.

Working like it should.

By the time you've paid £2 for the bottle of coke and cleaned the EGR for it to 'coke' up again and start sticking in a couple of weeks you may as well spend £10 and get a removal kit, job done,  Wink

I was advised not to blank or remove the EGR valve by the guy who passed on this tip.

I had my 2.8' EGR blanked off for a while. During that period, the turbo developed over-boost. I'm not suggesting that both were related but I was advised to
give the EGR a clean in cola then connect it back as it should be.

The immediate outcome was the over-boost stopped and there was a very noticeable reduction of black smoke.

I used to feel terrible  Embarassed when being followed up hills with a thick black smoke belching from my truck.
