Also a camping virgin. Mrs. E has decided we should start going camping , we have been out and brought some bits and bobs but not a tent yet. We are going tonight with my brother and his family for the weekend but only 25 miles from home just to get a feel for it. We are borrowing their old tent.
I do love the outdoors but I'm in two minds about this lark , I do like my luxuries too |

Hi everyone. i understand this is an old thread but i like the topic. i always wanted to go camping but in London the options are limited. when it comes to gear, what is your view on North face products? do they do the job if you go camping? |

north face used to make a really decent product (i worked in outdoor retail for a few years, specialising in footwear but i also used to be a regional product trainer).
they do have a 'premium range' (summit series) however this is Over the top for most consumers.
i would say be aware of what is 'trendy' north face gear and what it designed to do the job. a lot of companies are doing this, Fjallraven make some cracking gear but there logo has become popular along with the 'scandi' scene. hence all them hessian cargo type bags with the fox logo.
North face make good tents. but when buying down insulating products compare the statistics on the label with competitors down fill should be over 650 for a quality product. and percentage should be over 70/30 (down/feather). bear in mind US down weight is 100 higher than UK so for example 650 from north face is actually 550.
this is quite in depth but worth bearing in mind when weighing up value between products.... i also find that Montane, Rab and Mountain equipment tend to offer a better all round product.
hope this helps |
