|
|
Hi. You guys have provided me with lots of useful info in the past. Hoping to glean a little more.
Have done some reading and not found much in the way of specifics. Is a 4th gen essentially just a face lifted 3rd gen with TCS pretty much. Or is there more to it?
I guess I'd like to know the reasons for going for a 4th Gen over a 3rd Gen if age is taken out of the equation?
Also for either gen was there ever an 'off road' package or anything? Ie a trim or variant more aimed at off roading. Or are they all equal?
And which if any had locking rear diffs?
Thanks. |

I know the mk4 has had the bugs worked out of the fuel pump. Doesn't cost upwards of £3k to fix it like the mk3. |

As above, the fuel pump doesn't give issues. Essentially the gen 4 is a gen 3 underneath with running gear etc. The gen 3 is generally agreed to be better put together than the gen 4. I struggle with my gen 4 and all it's dash rattles and creaks and groans. Then I drive it on the seal and for such a big heavy vehicle man it's impressive. |

any more reference/info to the fuel pump issue? £3k for a fix sounds pretty serious on a Vehcile potentially only costing that to buy in the first place. |

Thanks. So it's the injector pump then? And only on the 3.2's? And the consensus is all 4th gens have solved this issue or is there a cut off?
Have to say a risk of a £3k bill kind of puts me off too. Would probably be better spending £3k more and getting a 4th gen in some ways. Umm much to think about. |

Tank filler pipes rust and let muck and water into the fuel which kills the pump. Wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so horrendously expensive. |

Not quite - it is a bearing failure in the pump itself that lets go and put shards through the pump. If you found one with repaired fuel pump then it'd bE a great vehicle to buy.
The gen 4 is different as it runs a common rail system, so far no failures.
Rotting fuel lines will only be an issue if maintenance is not regular, changing fuel filters etc. |

Ok. Maybe a silly question. But when browsing places like eBay and Autotrader. How can you ID a 4th gen from a 3rd gen? What are the visual give always? |

The body is a different shape and the gen 4 has the spare wheel in the centre of the rear door, the gen 3 is off to one side. |

Ok got it. It's not the body, that still looks rather the same to me. But I can now see the headlights are a different shape. Thanks. |

Sorry for another question.
But looking on Parkers there seem to be 3 power outputs for the 3.2 engines for the 4th gens. 160'ish, 187 and 197.
How do can you know which is which when viewing? |

Can it be an chip Ecu power upgrade to get to this 197 horse power or is it not recommended as could shorten engine lifespan possibly? |
