My niece has a 05 reg shogun LWB auto which she has used to tow her horse box around but now has a problem.

It will drive along but seem not to get above 3rd gear, at about 30mph I "clunks? And the neutral light comes on, seems to go into limp mode to get home ok.

She has cycled through all the gears stood still and check the fluid, topped it up, seems to be going from red to brown as time goes so I suspect it's mixing with the original stuff.

The car is miles from me but good old uncle gets asked the question as I have one also.

Car has 127k miles on, any ideas?

Thanks.

First thing i'd do is give it a complete ATF change with the CORRECT ATF. There are how to's on this forum. It holds just short of 10ltr of ATF.
There is a correct way also to check the level of the Transmission fluid also which is also on this forum.
The ATF should be cherry red. Hopefully this will help?

She did top up the ATF with the correct fluid as I had told her to, never mix stuff that's for sure, she checked it running, hot, after cycling through the gears and holding it in each one for 30 seconds so I hope that was correct.

A complete ATF change seems the way to go.

Did she cycle through all the gears before going into Neutral and leaving the engine running to check it?

ATF change always a good idea as its changing colour.
