I have an issue with fuel gauge not working properly only goes down to 1/4 and no fuel light, nearly ran out, filled it cos I was suspicious of how long the last 1/4 was lasting. Is this a common fault?

I had this once and it was a crud film on the sender. If you take it out and clean it with IPA, it might work for you too |

Clocks faulty is my input but could be wrong, by any chance is your temperature gauge iffy too? Also the fuel sender is a separate unit. |

You can get the sender out. There is a hatch under the carpet in the rear seat area. Take that off to get under the floor there is another bolted on hatch that in turn gets you to the fuel sender.
I've changed all the components in my mk3, gauge, clocks, sender, still the fuel gauge is erratic.
We now just work on resetting the trip and brim the tank at 250 miles covered. Haven't run out using this method. |
