There are huge numbers of these things available, but can anyone recommend a petrol injector cleaner that has worked?

Any of the good names will work but the key is getting a slow acting cleaner as this works over time and clears away deposits, fast acting ones clear away the carbons and often let pieces drop onto the cylinder and create a hot spot.

i tend to not use halfords off the shelf stuff (afraid do some damage)  & I rely on using a good FULL tank of that expensive diesel from S h e el   to clean everything.  seems to make my Puma engine/Omega engine and Merc diesel run better.
it of course could just be my imagination!!!!

Not your imagination at all, Shell include a slow cleaner in their fuel which works within a few miles on an engine requiring cleaning and this is noticeable, run a few tanks of the stuff through it and it cleans everything and keeps it clean, expensive though.
