Disaster has struck. Crankshaft pulley has come loose and fallen off. What damage should I expect if I open the head. Is the engine interference or non interference. Is this the end? |

Hopefully your correct, it was dark when it happened and it's stranded, flat bed delivering it home tomorrow. I'm going to have to tap / helicoil the crank as well i think as the bolt threads are striped. |

Well got the car back and had a few hours so removed the radiator air con condenser unit so I could get a good look at the crank. Light was fading but i stuck a magnetized screwdriver into the crank bolt hole and some metal bits came out. However the nut is quite stripped so I'm hoping that the metal fragments are from that. The key on the old pulley is wrecked so it's no good to me. Local scrap yard has one for 50. Now I'm not a mechanic so I got a question or two. Currently there is no rad, the aircon condenser is out and the transmission oil cooler is disconnected (as it connects to the rad). The timing belt looks fine so I'm hoping there is no internal problems. Can I fire the engine up without these parts fitted to see if it turns over? At least that way I know if the engine is fine internally. Then I can rebuild with some new belts / water pump etc. Should I turn the engine over by hand with a big spanner on the crank to see if it moves freely? Any advice welcomed at this stage. |

Timing belt looks fine and all marks line up, so I'm guessing the belt didn't slip and cause any internal damage. I can turn the engine over by had and nothing feels out of place. Tried to turn by key but it doesn't start, doesn't sound bad though. I'm hoping the battery is just a bit low to fire her up. I do get a lovely squirt of oil from the AT oil cooler as the pipes aren't attached as the rad is out. I'll need to create a loop to stop that next time I try to turn it over. Anyway battery is out and charging hopefully tomorrow there will be some life. |

Got a pulley, and fitted it. Engine is cranking but not starting. Scratching my head now. Don't want to remove the head to check valves. Is there any reason why the engine wouldn't start without the radiator / aircon condenser fitted? |
