|
|
Hi all
My 1989 MK1 2.5 has a manual preheater switch fitted by the previous owner. I’ve just replaced the glow plugs as thought the old ones were knackered (took forever to start in the morning). There’s no improvement to starting in the truck, so I’ve checked the voltage arriving at the metal bar feeding the plugs and it’s only 4v (it climbs to 5v when the switch is held down for 10 secs). There’s just under 12v leaving the relay.
Any ideas??
I’m a complete n00b with electrics so the most basic layman’s terms would be great lol
Thanks in advance.....

follow the wire leaving the relay (where you state you've 12v+ish) and check that wires condition for damage/wear including any connectors, especially the one where the m4 bolt joins it to the alloy rail that connects to the top of the glow plugs. You can go as far as to replace that rail with a better conduction copper one too, that auction site has them. Once 12v+ is achieved make sure its all nice and tight and treat connectors and nuts to a little grease.
Try the above and see how it goes

Some 2.5s had the "quick glow" system and use 6.2V plugs - not sure if the MkI had that though.
Follow the wire from the relay and look to see if there is a big resistor between the relay and the bus bar.
It will look something like THIS |

The quick start had two relays which is another identification. |

Thanks for the help guys. I’ll have a look at the wire from the relay and make sure it’s sound, plus see if it has that resistor, although I don’t recall seeing it. There are also two wires connected to the bar, both joined onto a plug and coupled together?? There is a second relay next to the other one so I’ll see if that’s connected in some way.
Am I able to run a wire straight from the relay to the bar and disconnect the other two??
Thanks

As you are manually operating the glow plugs, 12 V is ok, but the time to hold in the switch, button is 8 seconds. If you have energised the plugs for much longer than this, they may be burned out. Test each one for resistance or continuity. |

Hi trekker
I got the same results when I was using ten seconds before I tested it. I will check them though.
Am I able to disconnect the wires from the relay to the plugs ( there are actually 3?? Not sure what they are??) and replace it with a single wire from relay to plugs?
Cheers

Why are you using 12 volt plugs in a quick start system as you have? |

I assume it is because he has a manual button installed as the glow control unit is not working. |

OK looks like it’s sorted. I removed the old wire from the relay and replaced it with a new length. Gets 12v to the bar now and starts after a 5 second press on the button.
Thanks for all the advice, hopefully this is the solution 😎 |
