Hi,
After recently revamping the injection pump I found out the A/C idle-up feature no longer works.
I am talking about the increase of idle RPMs every time the A/C compressor starts.
From what I´ve learned in this forum there is a VSV (Vacuum Switching Valve) that hooks up somehow to the pump and takes care of revving up the engine.
Looking at the engine I cannot identify either the VSV or the hose that supposedly connects it to the pump and don´t have any documentation on the subject.
Could somebody help either with pictures or correcting me if I´m wrong ?
My Montero is a 1999 GLS 2.8TDI 4M40 engine.

This pic shows the air conditioning idle-up rod, which sits just below the main accelerator cable:
As you state, this rod is actuated by a vacuum solenoid. If you follow the rod back, you will see it.
Here's the page from the 4D56 workshop manual. It's the same for the 4M40 from what I can see.

If you need to adjust the rod length, you'll see that a bottle screw arrangement is used. So the locknuts at each end have opposite threads. |

I will not adjust anything at this point as this used to work fine so probably something is broken.
I could identify the parts in my engine, it's not exactly like your picture but close.
Now I need to figure out which component is the problem.

Begin with the vacuum hoses, remove them and suck them to see if you have a leak. |

There is a vac rail that runs along and above the inlet manifold, at the end of this just before it goes into a hose (and off to the brake servo) there is a small tee point, the vac for the idle up comes from there, a hose runs along the bulkhead to the VSV on the bulkhead above the rear battery, it then runs to the vac diaphragm housing on the injector pump that pulls the linkage pictured above |

Thank you all guys.
Looking at it while it while the A/C was on I could see the rod was actually moving as expected so the vacuum circuit was fine.
It was just a matter of adjustment, the rod was moving but far from the point where it could apply any effect on the throttle.
I had to remove the battery though to have good access.
Now it works nice an sweet as it used too.
Problem solved!
Next thing in my list is the auto choke but that´s a different story. |
