I previously owned a 2001 Mk3 and had a problem where I'd be driving along an A road or a Motorway and there would be a sudden loss of power accompanied by clouds of white smoke and the car would cut out and coast to a halt. Once or twice it restarted after waiting for 30+ minutes and once I had it recovered by the AA.

I had the codes checked and it also came up with EGR fault, so the EGR was comprehensively cleaned but the fault re-occurred.

At first I suspected the Diesel pump but it was an intermittent fault so it didn't appear to be a component that was wearing out, it was something that, depending on circumstances, just decided to fail.

I was then convinced by a local garage that it was the Turbo blowing it's seals, £1,150 later and the same fault happened driving it home from the garage.

Eventually some old timer in a back-street garage uncovered that there are a pair of "switches" under the engine somewhere, that have something to do with fueling, and these were occasionally failing, he replaced them for £250 (parts and labour) and the fault never re-occurred!

I wish I could be more exact but this was about 4/5 years ago so I can't remember the exact part and I sold the car with the history so can't check the records, it does give you something to go on though.
