Good evening and thanks for taking the time to read this, my first post on your forum.

I have been running a Land Rover Discovery 300 tdi (boo!) for the last 8 years on 100% home made bio diesel and other than when the temperature dipped to -13c one year have experienced few problems. However all good things must come to an end and the Disco is about to be given a happy retirement/scrapped/shot etc.

Now miserable as I am, I wish to continue to use the locally available cheap bio diesel and need an alternative vehicle. This must be a 4 x 4 to tow a trailer and carry logs from the woods without getting stuck. It would also be nice if it did not rust away to nothing in the chassis and body mount department.

Having thought of nothing else for the past three weeks, I have whittled my choice down to a Shogun. I would prefer the large full size model, but a combination of price/fuel consumption/etc has steered me towards the smaller Shogun.

Now the questions.....

I have looked through about thirty pages on the Bio/Fuel forum on this site and have yet to find a definitive answer. But I may be stupid/partially blind/ or just missed the appropriate entry and as such am not sure how late I can go and which specific model.

But I rather fancy a Mitsubishi Shogun Sport (2.5L diesel, 114BHP loads of torque and great towing ability.........somewhat akin to my old Disco but much better built and with a sunroof which probably does not shower the occupants every time it rains, a headlining which does not droop onto the place where my hair used tobe and hopefully a chassis and body which love each other and do not want to part.)

I read that a 2002 model of the Shogun Sport is fine on most things, including Bio, BUT If I was to empty my wallet completely, what is the latest model year I  could safely use to fulfil my needs.

Many thanks for reading the foregoing and I can only apologise wholeheartedly if this same question has been asked many times previously and I missed it.

Kindest regards from a very cold and now snowy hillside in Southern Scotland.

Hi - welcome to the club after finally moving over from the dark side!

I will pm Simon for you (newbies cannot send pms for a week or so) as he runs his Challenger on Veg oil which I know is not biodiesel but he may be able to give you some advice.

One thing about the Sport - it has part-time 4WD so you couldn't use 4WD on solid surfaces - it would be OK on mud/gravel/sand etc.

The original, full size Shoguns/Pajeros have SuperSelect which allows them to run in 4WD on all surfaces at any speed.

Thank you so much for such a swift and helpful reply, if only other sites were as decent.

Permanent 4wd does not bother me as I would only require the extra grip on the soft and slippery stuff.

The fact that it can tow a reasonably heavy trailer, filled with wood, or a Rally Car and not leave me stranded in a forest is all that I am looking for, but the need to run on Bio is crucial as I do quite a bit of on road motoring too.

Thanks again, Roz

P.S. apologies for the duplication of my message, it was not intentional, in fact I have no idea how I did it. If someone can kill one and leave another I would be deeply indebted to them.

Yep it's a nice forum.

You might have to wait a while for some replies as it has gone a bit quiet this weekend. I assume loads of people have gone away for Easter.

Hiya
Just picked up Pete's PM. He's correct in that I run my 2.8 Challenger on vegetable oil mix, but I have zero knowledge of biodiesel.  What I do know is that both biodiesel and vegetable oil are aggressive on various elastomers that are commonly used in the Zexel fuel pumps.  I had to have my pump rebuilt shortly after I started using vegetable oil, but that was nearly four years ago and I've had zero problems since.

As far as I know, the 98 bhp 2.5 engine uses the Zexel fuel pump which is based on the Bosch VE design, so that should be fine on biodiesel (apart from above warning about seals failing).  I don't know if the 114Bhp engine is bio compatible or not.  You may find the answer on one of the specialist veggie/bio forums or from Mitsubishi UK.
