|
|
Hi All,
Been watching Long Way Down on TV and I gotta say I like the look of those safari tents that fit on top of the Nissan Patrols. They open up on top of the roofrack and have an awning that comes out too, awesome! Has anybody got any info on them at all ??? Can I get one for my Paj?
Cheers

do ya mean these sort of things?
they are ok, but can also be a real pain ..... spent some time in kenya rough camping with 2 4wd's - one with this sort of set up, the other we had seperate normal crew tents .. 6 man ridges .. ok, time wise, the roof top with awning was quick, but reduced roof load space and meant that car was out of use, which was rubbish when we stayed for a few days in one place, but wanted the car to go out on safari ....
it's the old campervan and caravan argument ... get yourself set up, ready for the camp, but you need your vehicle ... oops ..
there are other awnings for cars, but to be honest you pay a premium... my view would be to get a big tent, back your car up to it, and use a large tarp... as a gap filler much cheaper and more versatile
identify what uses you need the gear for - this is key in any expedition
hope this helps

I'm also interested in them, in a "don't really need one, but they look good" kind of sense.
The way I see it:
Pros
1. Easy and quick to build
2. They don't need so much pegging out - or none, depending on size and design. This would be useful here in Greece as the ground is so rocky, even at campsites, that it's very difficult to pitch a conventional tent. I've seen people turn up at campsites with a powerdrill and masonry bits, and drill holes for their pegs!
3. You start with a nice flat surface for the night - see point above, no rocks in your back.
4. You're less vulnerable to animals in the night - be it Lions and Tigers or next doors moggy!
5. You're better insulated against the ground temperature
Cons
1. The vehicle is "disabled"
2. You lose a lot of roofrack capacity
3. You have to climb up after the evenings beers (and down in the dark for the toilet)!
4. You either have to climb up every time you want something form your kit, or down to get dressed in the morning.
So yes, it comes down to a long hard think about what you intend to use it for. |

Hi all, thanks for the replies, I was interested in one as a bit of a 'weekend or overnight' campervan alternative, quick to pitch and off the ground. I have been mountain biking in Wales a few times this year and it would be easier to just pull up at the car park the night before unfold your roof tent, open a tinnie and wait for the morning ride!
Can you buy them in the UK or are they an import? Anybody know?
