No I haven't checked atf yet . I've read a few bits on internet about this model hasn't been fitted with gearbox oil cooler . Just wondered if that's correct and if so can you retro fit a gearbox oil cooler ??

It is possible to fit a cooler to most vehicles, but I would leave that until you have checked the ATF level and condition.

I am not an expert on your model but I assume the procedure is the same as for the standard Pajero / Shogun which is:

1) Drive the truck to get the gearbox up to normal temperature
2) Leave the engine running and put the selector into each of the positions for 20 seconds.
3) Return the selector to "P" - leave the engine running.
4) Check the ATF level on the gearbox dipstick - it should be near the upper mark.

Check the colour and smell of the ATF on the dipstick (wipe it onto a bit of kitchen roll) It should be Cherry red and not smell burnt.

If it does smell burnt or is brown or black then it needs changing.

Yes, I second all of that.
Are you sure its stuck in second? ie, no 1st gear?
Or might it be failing to engage third?
Low fluid level can cause that, or blocked filters.
