I followed the work shop manual by removing the loop pipe work at front cooler, started procedure. I removed the sump and filter and measured up the quantity and only got 5 litres.
I refilled system and had to put an extra litre in to get it to hot max mark so I can only conclude it was a litre low. I've read here of people getting 9 litres out so bit stumped.

Did you pump the old oil out until new oil appeared at the loop pipe?  Unless it was mega low in the first place it sounds like you have now mixed 6 litres of new oil with 3-4 litres of old oil, .

I didn't, afterwards that crossed my mind. I'll do oil change in a few months and do it that way. Just got confused as several have mentioned on this forum that they get 8-9 from loop pipe.

I've done it twice on my 2002...

Each time I 'pumped' about five litres and then drained the sump which was almost empty - hardly anything there. I've had nowhere near 8 or 9 out of it.

That's because you have left circa 4 litres of old oil in the gearbox/torque converter, it has to be pumped out with the new oil.  You will never get 100% out but can do a lot better than 5 litres.

This is the full process, admittedly for a mk4, but can't be that different.

Thanks for the replies - I apologise for my tardy response but I have been away.

I have it now, pump, drain sump, re-fill and pump again.

I'll do that at my next service...

So how much ATF fluid would one need to do this correctly? (Approx)

Hi all,

Sorry to resurrect an older thread but have a question on this subject. There seems to be no mention of changing the ATF filter in the replies, only the fluid. Is the general concensus to not worry about breaking the sump of the box because its a sealed system and anything clogging the filter is going to be terminal, and just stick with regular oil changes?

Just wondered as it's a job I have to do on my truck, I have the filter and gasket but if its an operation that will have no real benefit but may cause a potential leak in what is presently a leak free sump then I will just do the oil.

Sorry if it seems a stupid question but thought it was worth asking. Very Happy  Very Happy

Cheers

Adie

Mine is a MkII but I think yours is very similar.

An ex-Mitsy mechanic told me that it is not necessary to change it and he was taught that it is a "non-service item".

I have not changed my filter in the eight years I have had my truck - but I have changed my ATF every two years  - so it has had an ATF change every 10,000 miles on average.

The other school of thought is that if you already have the filter then you might as well change it.

Hi

Thanks for the reply  Very Happy

The filter came with the truck when I bought it. Its just very dry underneath now that I have sorted the corroded cooler pipe and really did not fancy causing a new potential leak if it was thought un-necessary.

Been looking at some MILLERMATIC ATF SPIII-WS as the oil. Does anyone have any views on this one or can a better alternative be recommended?

Cheers again

Adie

That is what I have used since I got my truck.

Adiey, due to the design of the filter they are never changed as when the engine is stopped the oil runs back through the filter an into the sump and this continual flushing keeps it clean, the only time you replace them is if you have broken something and got contamination into the box, also, they do not use a gasket so if one was supplied with the filter it is likely to be a poor quality filter as a sealing compound is used to seal the sump.
